Intermittant Lock-ups
Over the last few weeks my computer has locked-up about everyother day
- Everythink freazes for at least 5/10secs then comes back with a flurry of harddrive activity then its fine for ages. (also, if its longer than about 50sec, i reboot)
- And this has been geting grandually worse over the last few days, it now happens about 2/3times a day.
Just wondering what its likly to be?
- I thought it maybe harddrive? Like as if its waiting for it to work, then it does, and all it ok.
- Otherwise i dont know at all
Not quite sure how old the HDD is, or how much it has been used in the past (i got it 2nd hand with this pc)
- But its a 60GB maxtor diamondmax+ (6L060J3)
Ive being think off replacing the HDD with somthing a bit bigger (and quiter) anyway, so if it might be that, i might just bit the bullet and get a new HDD.
- Otherwise, im going home (uni vac's) on friday, so might do a fully system rebuild when i get home.

Well, it still doing it.
- I end up reseting it 4/5 times a day now, and it freazes for a fews secs maybe 30+ times a day.
It just freazes, theres a little bit of random access noise, during which the HDD light doesnt light! secs later winamp stops playing, Then all of a sudden, the access lgiht comes on, loads of access, and its fine for a bit!
Im back home now, and i think i (working) 2GB hdd, so i might stick that in, install windows on it, and see if that cures it.

I get the same problem on my work laptop, well just freezes in that app for a while, particularly hates (network) printing. Can't work out what it is either, except that I don't think it's the HD: at least it's not like any other HD failure I've seen.

look in task manager CPU (load) column and see if something jumps to 100% when its locking up.
