    PSU Help

Hi, i've recently bought the following:

    Mushkin High-Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 991434, DDR 400 (PC3200), CAS 2-3-2-6 £120 inc delivery.
    Opteron 146 s939 = £112 inc delivery.
Thermaltake Big Typhoon heatpipe CPU Cooler = £24.
    Connect3D ATi Radeon X1600XT 256Mb GDDR3 DVI/TV Out (PCI-E) = £120.44 inc delivery.

The Motherboard i'm yet to decide on (SUGGESTIONS WELCOME). OCing features a must, obviously as i've got the Opty 146. Not going SLi, room for the Thermal BT, no onboard VGA needed, no AGP, Firewire etc not needed.

I'm not sure what size power supply to go for (400w, 450w, 480w, 500w, 600w)???

Could you guys help me out here, i'm looking for silent (16dba/19dba or x1 120mm fan), PCI-Express compatible, modular would be nice but not essential, looks good but also not essential.

Price range would be roughly, in and around the £100-£140 mark for both PSU + MB.

    Thnx.

Consider a good quality 480~500W PSU will cost £50, you have around £90 for the motherboard. I heard that ASRock motherboard overclocks pretty well (and it is also cheap).
For PSU, I would recommend Seasonic, Tagan and Hiper.

If you could afford DFI, any of their NF4 offerings will be able to push your ram and CPU to the maximum.

Be aware that 1GB sticks with 2-3-2-6 are very bad overclockers (most of the time even worse than value stuff), and running a divider will somehow hinder cpu overclocking.

The last thing is, overclock and silent does not go together well. You overclock = more heat = need faster fan = not silent

Silent fans are expensive too, so I would recommend you to use the stock fan with your hsf/case first, see if they provide good enough cooling for your system, before shell out for silent fans that you will end up not using.

Alot of people recommend the Hiper 580W psu.

Bought one the other day, along with the Antec P180 case. Should be arriving on thursday, looking very forward to seeing how quiet i can get it to run.

The hiper isnt SLI ready. I know u said u didnt want sli but for future proofing its handy. Get a DFI mobo. new expert is very good for overclocking or even get the asus a8nsli deluxe or premium. They are good overclockers. Not as good as DFI but DFI are for xtreme overclockers tbh. Mushkin ram overclocks well so good choice there ( i have the 2gb redlines xtreme)

If by 580w Hiper he means the Type R versions, this is SLI ready, i have one through the house thats part of a xmas system i will be building tomoz / 26th!. The 580W Hiper Type R is also modular, keeping your case tidier, thus more effective airflow. If you can wait till the 26th - 27th, ill get back to you on how silent these are after ive got my system running.

If you want to be doing some extreme overclocking, go with the DFI boards. Ive bought the Asus A8N-E for my new system, and after browsing the net, reading through the manual etc. It seems to be a decent overclocker, not as good as the DFI boards though, again if you can wait till the 26th-27th i can get back to you on this.

The type r is not sli ready. They just give u a pci-e converter to use. I already asked about this in the scan forum a while back as i was going to get one but when i heard it didnt come sli ready and u had to use a converter i got the enermax liberty 620 watt instead. It only comes with one pci-e connecter. But as you said u dont need sli anyway iw as just thinking about future proofing.

It is still a great PSU dont get me wrong but for me that was the slight drawback that pushed me to get a different PSU.

The HIPER is on NVIDIAS certified SLI list.

    Get the Tagan 530W easycon.

Hmm... *searches through awesome Hiper Type-R Box...* yep there are two PCI-E Connectors, one that screws in and one that runs of the molex and has an extra molex on it (useful cos of Extra power connector on board!) Its SLi Ready adn even if you don't use SLi, like me, its superb, I've recommended it to loadsa people and they've all ben really impressed. Its great for the money!

So how quiet are the Hiper R's?

Also i've heard the chipset fans can be noisy on the DFI boards. true at all?

If not, then i might head on down to PC World and see if they have the £50 offer on, stated in the Bargains forum.

EDIT: Torn between these two at the moment i think:

    Aero Cool Turbine Power 550W

    or

    HiperPower Type R 580W Modular PSU ATX2.2 - Blue

Im also wondering how quiet the Type R's are. Hopefully quiet than this thing im using in my 4 year old system!

Although on the site i bought my Type-R from, (ebuyer) there advertised at 18db! 2 Fans aswell so keeping your system cooler.

People to back up this would be better though.

Well i'm no expert on noise but *sticks head down by case* i can't hear the PSU fans over my case 120mms. If I let everything shut down and just have the psu running then its really quiet, practically inaudible.

Ok thnx for that Raven, much appreciated.

The Hiper Type R 480w comes with x1 PCI-E connector and is not SLi ready.

The Hiper Type R 580w comes with x2 PCI-E connectors and IS SLi ready.

    Just to clear things up

Any news whether DFI chipset fans are loud at all? I was looking at the Asus A8N SLi-Premium because of the silent chipset cooler, but seems a little out of my budget at the moment.
