    XP2800 vs P4 2gig for encoding

    Hi guys

My missus Sair has a Gizmondo as of yesterday and I need to whack a few films that we own onto an SD card.

    I run an nForce2 with 2x512 6-2-2-2 and a 2800 XP
I have a DVD player in it and therefore can do what I need to do for her.

But she has a SFF MSI Hermes with Intel chipset, 2x512mb and an old P4 2gig. She doesnt have a DVD player, and before I dismantle the thing to whack a DVD drive in....gotta ask...is it gonna be much quicker encoding?

    Cheers guys

I'm not sure it would be any quicker at encoding... if memory serves, the XP2800 runs at close to 2GHz, and Athlons do more work per Hz. Even with the P4 in general being better at encoding, with that difference in speed, I would have thought that the Athlon would be better.

i thought that too....but by all accounts P4's are better at this kinda stuff, and the DVDx software has an option for P4 (as well as Athlon 3dnow)

I'm sure P4 had a load of special encoding instructions hardcoded in.

The 2800+ should definately be faster, its virtually the same clockspeed but works far more efficiently.

Tom's cpu chart for video encoding is here, doesn't have a 2800+ but it'll be similar to the sempron 2800+:

True, but I'd expect the XP2800 to be so much faster that the P4's advantage in encoding still doesn't let a P4 2GHz catch up.
