    Why is this so cheap?

    Hi,

Why is this 7800GT £50 cheaper than most?:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=250971

Here is another GT which is more expensive:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=314599

I can't really see why it's so much cheaper than all the others, but then I don't really know what to look for.

    Can anyone tell me why?

P.S. I just spotted a Leadtek card for £209 as well.

There are a few reasons why similar cards differ in costs

    1) stock core clock speed 400mhz, 425mhz 450mhz
    2) software bundle
    3) expensive/quiet coolers
    4) manunfacturer premium
    5) 'quality' componets

I'm looking to get a new graphics card possible a GT the "256MB ScanFX PCI-E *Extreme Edition* GF7800GT *450 Core 1.05Ghz Mem* (256bit) ViVo 2xDVI" on the 'todayonly' page looks interesting as well.

by the way the "256Mb Gigabyte PCI-E GV-NX78T256V-B 7800GT (256bit) ViVo 2xDVI SLi Ready" appears to be a bit cheaper if you get it from the 'todayonly' part of scan £171.00 (£200.93 inc vat) instead of the link you posted £177.49 (£208.55 inc vat) - not sure what you would be charge at 'check out' the link you buy from or the cheapest price?

I thought Gigabyte were a good brand, and would use good quaity components? Why would a manufacturer underclock a card compared to the competition?

I'm no going to be getting anything until Scan re-opens on the 3rd, so by then today only offers will be different.

I'm looking for specs on the gigabyte card atm.

Gigabyte are a good brand and use good quality components. They just manage to pump out cards at lower prices for some reason.

Also, the Scan Today Only offers arent going to change from now until the 3rd as they arent open so you can order it on the 3rd at that price.

    Great stuff.

I can put the money saved into a new case!

    Thanks all.

P.S. If you can offer any tips on cases, my Case Help thread I think is still on the first page

I'm not sure what the nvidia clock speed is for the bog standard GT (I think it's 400mhz). When I talk about stock core speed, I'm on about the core speed the board is set to (sorry I was not very clear) the Gigabyte might be 400mhz the 'Scan board' states 450mhz so is more likely to be quicker out of the box - could be a different story if to try to overclock.

The only card I can comment on is a Ti4200 from 'inno3D', it does not overclock at all but helps heat the room my P.C. is in - i not sure this info will help anyone choose their next card.

Btw the 5 points I posted above were just general observations on why there maybe a price difference.

Yeah, I understand that. My comment meant that if most of the boards around clock at say 450Mhz, why would any manufacturer clock it at less than that, and then sell it cheaper? If it uses the same components, then surely it costs the same to make?

Anyway, I might go and order soon, I'm just waiting to get enough posts to get free delivery without spamming. If I can't get free delivery, I'll just get my parents to drive me there, it only takes half an hour up the motorway!

did a bit of research and the standsrd speed for a GT is 400/1000
    The gigabyte is 405/1000
    and the EVGA ios 445/1070

The gigabyte card is said to be a good clocker though

So it run cooler ? Sapphire also tends to lower their core bout 1-2 mhz (wat's the point ???). The cost factor might not be the same though, say if Gigabyte got cheapish labor or factory, watever, they can cut down on selling price

Yeah, just found the standard clock specs for the 7800s.

Is the GT just an underclocked GTX (Like the 6800GT was an underclocked Ultra)?

I don't really like overclocking, I've dabbled in it a couple of times and it's never gone right. If I can get a card that has a decent clock speed to start then I'll probably go for that. I've added the XFX to my list of potentials for that reason:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=249092

EDIT: The XFX card is the ScanFX one on "Today Only", so that seems like the better option. I'm not too interested in bundles.

Some mfrs may use a lower clock spped processor, which cost them less.

the 7800 GTX has 4 more pixel pipelines and uses faster Ram so the GT is not an underclocked variant if your going to spend £250 on a gt youd be aswell spend the extra £20 and get a GTX

As the nvidia quoted speed is 400mHz it probably only means that when gigabyte xfx or whoever buy the chip it is only garenteeded to do the 400mHz. A very small number of chips may not be able to do the 450mHz that xfx sell their boards at so they will have to thorw some away, or possibly pay nvidia more so they only get ones garanteed to run faster, so it costs more to sell a pre-overclocked board -thats my geuss
