Doesnt Switch off.
Recently my computer has been failing to actually switch itself off. (about 3times in 4)
- It does the whole "saving settings" thing, and the two main screens go black
- But my third moniter (powered off a pci card) stays lit (the default ms desktop blue colour) and the PC doesnt actually power off.
So i just hold pwr button in for 5secs, and go to bed and forget about, and it fine in the morning
Just wondering what might be causeing this, ive just swaped to a Sata HDD about a fortnight ago, but i think it did it 3/4 times before that. and i havnt done anything else to the hardware
- Is my motherboard slowly dieing on my (its a Abit AT7Max2)

If you pull the PCI videocard out does it still do it?
When did this problem start?
Dying motherboards are definitely bad. May be time for an upgrade.
-
Hmm... I get a similair problem. It actually turns off and the monitor goes blank and the power light on it starts blinking but the PC itself is still whirring away without properly shutting down.
-
I built a PC out of spare parts for my sister and I could never get it to close down either
But, she has been using it for ~4 years having to hold the power button for 4 secs to shut it off after closing down windows without any problems at all. I shouldn't imagine you have much to worry about :)

Yeah my PC (of about 8 months) doesn't switch off properly either. It used to, but it doesn't anymore. I leave it on pretty much 24/7, but on the rare event I want to shut down I have to press the power button after it's meant to have shutdown, as it just keeps on going as normal, with nothing on the screen (my motherboard is an Asus A8N SLi Deluxe ed. btw).

Yep same Mobo RDl, same prob, it used to work but now it doesn't.
-
Well, i tryed it (6times) with PCI card out, and it was eactly the same.
- Except it was the 1st (dvi) moniter on the AGP card that remained lit, rather then the pci card (which was unliky to lit up the moniter from its position on my desk)
I guess i'll just live with it, and hope thats the only problem?

I don't experience this problem.
However, I remember a few years ago, my friends old computer did this, and I once formatted for him and installed (Windows ME I think it was) Windows for him, and it stopped doing it.
Also, I do remember about 2 years ago this did happen to me when I used the shutdown command in Command Prompt, and I only used it once, and it made using the normal shutdown stick with that message saying it's safe to shut down now... and the only way I got rid of that was formatting too..
It definitely does NOT sound like a motherboard problem though, maybe there is a setting in the BIOS? (doubt it though).

Look in the bios, then the APM (Advanced Power Management) setting in windows.
-
Peter's right, it's the APM that's causing you all trouble, although the tab to sort it (in 'Power Options') seems to have disappeared with SP2...
-
Yeah, i dont have the APM tab becuase im runing sp2
Also, i changed HDD a few weeks ago as well (about the time i installed the pci card, and this all started happening.
- Soim on a totatly fresh install of windows.
- ALthough, bar a few prgrams, as far as i know ive dont it all the same as ive always done before! (XPpro, SP2, etc etc)
The HDD was a Sata, instead of pATA, which involved a bit of messing, enabling the onboard sata/raid controller, and changing the boot-order and the like. but nothing else

I checked every APM BIOS setting about 12 times - LOL - and it definitely was not in there. In the end it's best to just go with the flow...

Well haveing gave up, ive just got back to uni last sunday and its been 100% good as gold since then.
- Weird!!
Maybe it just dosnt like being home...? (maybe its the 246volts we get..)
