which card to buy today

anyone got any opions on which card to buy as of today nothing down the line etc, im looking at either a 7800gt or a ati 1800xl.

just really wanna know what peoples experience of these are and which is the better buy as of today my budget is about £300.

the reason i ask is im fed reading and searching the net for the info and would prefur some unbiast opionons of these compared to each other, i am assuming the ati is the better card but with so many opinions on line id prefur a real response from someone who has them.

If the price was the same I'd go for the X1800XL. (Actually, I did.) The 7800GT is slightly better in some games and 3DMark03. The X1800XL has a slight edge in 3DMark05 and is a more ppowerful card in general especially when running high res with lots of eye-candy. I also find the X1800XL to be less quirky. Use the Omega drivers if you go ATI. They are much better.

Not at all. The XL is one of the best overclocking cards ive ever seen. The memory is seriously underclocked, especially if you get the 1.4ns models.

For the same price im with Storm, a XL is the way to go, but ive seen GT's for around 200quid, the cheapest XL ive seen is 230.

If you can spend 300, you can get a 7800GTX, or you can spend a little bit more and a get X1800XT 512mb, ive seen em for 325, id i wasn't looking hard.

Not really. The X1800XL has the same 1.4ns Samsung DDR3 and R520 GPU as the X1800XT so it overclocks like mad, especially on the RAM. It also has the ability to raise the VGPU, MVDDC and MVDDQ (voltages) with sliders in ATITool, as well as fully software controlled fanspeed so you can make it as loud or quiet as you like.

ATI is much more reliable also. I have less problems with them which means my customers spend more time using their conputers and less time calling me about problems.

Your such a noob. The XT uses 1.26ns, and the XL uses 1.4ns and 2ns.

As for ATI being more reliable, what products are we talking about? I've never heard of any major problems with NVidia cards. My original GeForce is still going strong, as are all the other cards I've bought since.

It also depends on your monitor setup so unless you have 1600x1200 or planning to do so soon you'd be best getting a 7800GT (can get the XFX extreme edition for about £230 and this will do the job on pretty much everything)

Then wait till the next gen is out sell that and move on to another mid-to high, more bang for buck that way and its what I'm planning on doing. I was going to go the GTX route but its wasted unless I upgrade my monitor which I'm not going to do for a bit and by that time there will be bigger and better contenders GFX wise to oo an um over?

i originally ordered the evga 256 at 475 clock speed but scan sold it out and sent me the extreme xfx u talked off but in tests i saw the evga kick butt, so now its still outta stock im looking to see if i can get summit better now, the ati is getting the gr8 reviews but i appreciate the feedback of them to help me decide.
if i could just get that oppy 170 id be set up ready and not have a box of parts to look at...lol

MMM just done some reading as I never new the ATi was in the same price range and for games with AA and AF enabled it does better.... bloody hell it's back to the drawing board to decide what I want

ATI aren't more reliable, thats just Storm, and his silly opinions. best bet is to ignore like i will do from now on as he all opinion, and has no fact, hell look at him chucking around false info about the X1800Xl memory.

Nvidia and ATI are both as reliable as each other. I prefer ATI myself, i had a wicked experience with my X800XT PE, an i never really liked my 7800GTX that much, the X1800 line are awesome with AA.

Between the two I would personally go for the 7800gt over the x1800xl. The extra cash for the xl isn't justified IMO. But if your budget is 300 you may be able to get a 7800gtx which is even better.

I'm confused. The link you post shows the x1800xl is still more expensive (link has the x1800xl at 229 + delivery, the 7800gt is 204.92 + (potentially free) delivery from scan)
