Airflow, or rather the lack of

The scenario: AMD AthlonXP 2500+ with stock retail HSF in an Abit NF7-S in a coolermaster centurion.

The question: Do i need to put a couple of 80mm fans in to create some airflow, or will the cpu cooler be ok just recycling the air within the case? If so what fans do you recommend?

Ideally you should have at least two fans. One near the bottom of the case pushing air in and the near the top of the case at the back pushing air out.

I would recommend the YS - Tech 80mm Silent fans, which can be had for about £5 each. Not sure if i am allowed to link to competitors. New to this site.

My V770 modding case, runs with great temps, with a Zelman cooler on the GPU, Aero 7 Lite on the CPU, with a dab of ceramique, a couple of Akasa 80mm case fans at the top, and an Akasa system exhaust sucking air out.

I wouldn't want stock coolers on everything, and no case fans though, and 80mm case fans, and system exhausts are very cheap.

Personally I don't run any case fans because of noise - though I use an effing huge full tower case and only push my P4 1.8 to 2.2 with a coolermaster fujiyama hsf. Rock solid stable and VERY quiet.

If it runs stable, I wouldn't bother with case fans. I'd consider an aftermarket cpu cooler with an 80mm fan though if I were in your shoes, possibly even underclocking slightly at lower voltage.

Your PSU may be enough to expel the hot air from the case, ideally you should at least have ventilation at the bottom front of your case to promote optimum airflow. Generally the most important placement for the case fan is at the back near the CPU area pushing the warm air out but it is considered best to also add an intake fan at the bottom front to help introduce cool air into the case ... just ensure you have good ventialtion around the fan area (you need somewhere for the air to come or go). As said bottom line is, if you're stable then you're stable so don't worry.

Sorry not really what you asked but you might consider changing your CPU HS+F. If you do then you cannot go far wrong with a ThermalTake Volcano 11 which can be had for about sixteen squid. These come with an adjustable fan so you can reduce the noise if needs be. Also bear in mind that the thermal compound that comes with a stock CPU HS+F normally sucks. Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound for about four squid is the best to go for.

I guess you just need to watch the temperatures. They might be fine now through autumn and winter (I hate winter ), but in the summer it might get a bit hot.

it is an antec truepower psu, so im guessing that promotes airflow pretty well. on the downside that means its dragging all the dust into the psu, but hey, you cant have everything in life!

The aluminium case will dissapate a lot of the heat. Look at the temps if they are ok then dont bother with the fans.

My wife's pc had no case fans with an xp2000, r9500 pro and no psu push through and the temps are always fine. Cpu never goes above 50 and case is never any more than 35. I think people are too quick to make their machines noisy sometimes especially if they arent overclocking it.
