    New system questions

Looking at this for a system

    Lian Li V1100 Case
    Tagan 580w EasyCon PSU

    DFI LanParty NF4 SLi-DR
    PNY GEForce 7800GT
    2048 mb Corsair Match 3200 C2PT DDR
    AMD Venice 3200 64bit 939 CPU
    SoundBlaster Audigy 4
    Tv card PCI

    Anyone spot any problems?

Is the 7800GT a card that takes up 2 slots? If so will the PCI-X 1x slot be blocked?
If I went for dual 7800GTs in SLI would I lose a PCI slot if the cards at 2 slot card?

    Anyone recommend a better PSU?

Depends on whether you want Modular, If that isn't an issue I'd go with the Seasonic S-12 600W. If you want modular then I'd go for the OCZ ModStream 520w ATX2.2 Power

It's personal Preference on brand tbh. Big PSU's are often generally underused, unless you have everything under the sun attached to them. They're also useful for Overclocking.

    aaargh! MY EYES!

out of curiousity, why are you going for such a low-end cpu when the rest of the system is so highly specced ?

What are you talking about? It is a great system for gaming and everyday usage, and very evenly configured. The case is the most high-end item in there.

The PNY is a single slot card so your PCI slots will still be accesable

    Hi,

I'm also looking to build a new system for multi-tasking and gaming... what do you guys think to this spec, any feedback would be greatly appreciated...
    Check it out here:
    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/shoplist...A-2516DD757F93

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 2MB, BOXED w/fan
    DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert, FW, nForce4 SLI, Socket-939, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16
    Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO DDR 1024MB Kit w/two matched 512MB
    Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO DDR 1024MB Kit w/two matched 512MB
    XFX GeForce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 eXtreme, 475MHz, PCI-Express,Dual-DVI/ViVo,Retail
Thermaltake Silent Purepower 680W, Dual Fan, 4xSATA, ATX/EPS, SLI, 20/24pin
    Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 250GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM NCQ
NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-4551A, 16x, Dual, Ram, LabelFlash, Black OEM
Thermaltake Blue Orb II CPU Cooler, Blue Light, 17dBA Socket 775/754/939/940
Thermaltake Xaser Tsunami Black Aluminum with Window (Without PSU)

I want my system to be as quiet as possible as i would also like to run it as a media center. I've about maxed out my budget here at £1500. Thinking of adding a
Creative SB X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS soundcard and another gfx card when games need that much power later.

Venice 3200 performs as well as a San Diego 3700 the 3700 has the 1mb L2 cache and is £50 more expensive on gaming benchmarks it only procues about 1fps higher at higher resolutions. Plus the system was on a £800 budget - it comes to £1000 but is future proof

939 over Opteron due to forward compatiblity for AMD X2

£50 for 1-3 fps is not cost effective. The L2 cache only seems to be beneficial for archiving and mathematic intensive work like compiling.

I just heard Tagan make good PSU, went modular since the non modular PSU they have uses 80mm fans the modular one uses 120mm fan = quieter.

@ sgoaty - thats what i like to hear

@ monkeeboy - whack the ram upto 2gig and spend less on the CPU you will see better performance

I would have to recommend OCZ memory for a DFI mobo, or corsair for an ASUS. Just trying to limit potential problems. And yes, i'd go for an s939 opteron personally too, and did.

hmm didnt look into those i just specced the system up in a few hours. The opterons didn't look to offer a huge performance gain over the AMD64's unless you started OC'ing iirc.

Would an opteron have been better, didnt realise they were 939?

@monekyboy I have 1gig of 2x 512 matched pairs already and then the new 2x 1024mb so essentially 3gb rather bummed out that my 512's are PC2700 not 3200 I knew it was a mistake at the time now its come back to haunt me biggest mistake I ever made. Eventually I'll get another 2x 1024mb and bump it to 4gig ram and 7800gt in SLI and go for a AMD X2 when prices hit £160... keep me going for another few years in expansion option.

Ok swapped out the Corsair for OCZ,

    OCZ Gold XTC DDR400 PC3200 1024MB DualKit w/two PC3200 512MB DIMM`s, CL 2-2-2-5
Comes in cheaper as well, just no flashing LED's on the ram sticks for me

@Tifosi, would you recommend i go for these

OCZ Platinum PC3200 2048MB Dual Kit w/two PC3200 1024MB DIMM`s, CL 2-3-2-5 with slighty slacker timings? In the long run i could upgrade to 4gb though

    Item: Corsair (TWINX2048-3200C2PT) 2GB (2 x 1GB Matched Pair) DDR
    PC3200 2x128Mx64 non-ECC 2x184
DIMM unbuffered 2-3-3-6 64Mx8 DRAMs Matched Pair Silver Heat Spreader
    Lifetime Warranty
    Qty: 1
    Cost: £148.87

Is what I have gone for from ebuyer, how much is the

    OCZ Platinum PC3200 2048MB Dual Kit w/two PC3200 1024MB DIMM`s, CL 2-3-2-5

The OCZ at the same price level to the Corsair I chose (£175 ish) has much slacker timings and is £5 more!
OCZ Performance Dual Channel Kit 2x1024MB DDR400 PC3200 CL 3-3-3-8 (LIFETIME WARRANTY) (OCZ4002048PFDC-K).

Most 1gig sticks have slacker timings buit I find more ram makes games load faster, which i'd prefer over tighter timings.
