Overclocking with nTune

I have had my first experiences with overclocking to day, with Nvidias nTune software.

I have managed to get it stable (by stable i mean it would go through 3Dmark05, is that enough?) @ 210.

I have tried 215 but it will it stops about halfway through 3dmark.

See my system spec list for details and i am using an arctic cooling freezer 64 pro oh and my ram is now GEIL value 2GB (not very OC i know)

To try and get it to 215 do i need to add a higher voltage? nTune says that it changes the memory settings with the FSB (its a little slider to increase the FSB lol) what does that really mean?

EDIT: what a really want to OC to is 218 so my cpu becomes a 4000+ :)

DO NOT use ntune

In fact you should not use any windows software at all for overclocking :o

Use the BIOS

Click Here for a good starters guide :)

And yes - you should add some volts - but please use the BIOS :D

Ok, ok

I was going to do bios (infact i did rease it to 202 ROCK!)

Then i googled it and everywhere kept saying SOFTWARE lol, ill give that guide a read thanks.

OK well i have completed step one, i have worked out what my CPU goes to.

I got it to an HTT (FSB) of: 275 with a 10x multiplier

That was with a CPU voltage of 1.7v and a chipset voltage of 1.7v

(it was also set with a 100mhz memory speed to stop the memory being the limiting factor)

Thats a good chip right?

Anyway i have only got value ram so ill see how that goes tomorrow.

CHECK YOUR TEMPS!!! - 1.7v on an air cooled san diego (presuming you are on air) is a bit high. I would not like to go past 1.65v unless I knew my cpu temps and voltage readings were accurate.

275fsb is not bad but is that stable? Run 3dmark05 and OCCT for a quick idea of whether the system is stable.

Temps were coming up at below 48degrees (socket temps which from the guide i gather thats ok?) anyway im not leaving it at that because as is aid that was just so i knew the limiting factor of the CPU. I also have quite good air cooling, but i have takien it off those settings anyway and i am now on to testing the memory.

And yes it was 275 stable (it ran 10 minutes of prime95 max heat torture test with no errors, a 1m test of super pi with no errors and it ran 3dmark fine, and gave me a 127 boost (its very GPU dependant))

Now i have come up to a problem, the gide i am using says

My HTT is at 200 but i cannot find memory divider but i guess that means set the RAMs mhz to to 200 so it is at the same speed as my DDR400 memory?

My CPU multiplier is at 10 (i have 11 stock) and have my memory voltage at 2.7v.

The problem i now have is what do i change to 215? Im guessing it does not mean the HTT cause it just told me to set it to 200? The only thing i can think it means is the the RAM mhz, and so this would mean what i said above about the memory divider was wrong? However, even if it was wrong it will only go up to 200 anyway.

I have one more theory and that is that it means take the HTT to 215 and the the memory mhz to auto, then it would automatically match the HTT and so would be 1:1 right? Then if i went faster that the ram could go then it would then start to get errors on memtest and super pi?

Am i right anywhere at all?

You shouldn't go beyond 1.5v really, not on air. Also, make sure you lower the LDT multiplier to x4 for a HTT up to 250, and above that you'll need to lower it further to x3...

Hey leave me be! :p I'm yet to fit my Akasa AK913 (that's when the fun begins) and it's actually a really good overclock.

LDT multiplier's at 4 x 250 HTT = 1000. ~ Can't go higher without lowering the LDT.

RAM's on a 5:6 divider so it's back to the stock 200MHz. ~ Keeps the timings tight.

Just below FX57 speeds. ~ ZING!

52°C under constant load on stock cooling. ~ Safe as houses.

I wasnt dissing the speed, just your grammer, it reads as if you have 2.75Ghz over stock.

And its better than my zero overclock at the moment (damn cmos battery)

If you reset CMOS it resets saved prefs

I am going to join everybody in saying that 1.7v is far too high - no matter what the temps (unless your using good water or phase). But then the choice is yours :)

Ill run it at a lower voltage when i get m final OC and i wont need to cause of my non OCing RAM. Anyway authough your 5GHz OC is very nice i stell am not sure what to do with this dam memory!

Yep, annoying as hell, especially as i get a SYSTEM IS NOW IN SAFE MODE, press F1 message everytin=me it boots, no time to go grab another though

roffle i wont even put that through my newcastle and that has a default of 1.5v

sitting nicely at 1.6v now with no noticeable change in temps. I wuv my XP90.

1.7v is too high no matter what your cooling method is. Temporary is fine for benchmarking, but it's not good to run that chip at 1.7v for extended periods.

And what was i doing? Benchmarking (well testing) now is anyone goign to tell me if i am correct about how to test how OC friendly my RAM is?

Memtest86+ tests 5 and 8 (at least 5 loops of each)

Then SuperPI 32mil, then maybe sandra and man I can't remember the name of the other one that I use a lot :)

Also generally playing games is a good indication :)

i find playing strategy games is good for testing ram stability.

When i had a dodgy stick of BH6 (and i mean super dodgy) it would play CSS for any period upto an hour before crashing (typical 30-45mins) but homeworld 2 would crash within about 5-10 mins.

Checking how far your ram will overclock just means putting your CPU multi to something ridiculously low such as 5 and upping the HTT until it will no longer work, you'll most likely hit your RAM barrier before your mobo barrier as DFI are just legendary for high HTT's.

EDIT: Just saw what DW said, should i take it down to 5x or should i keep it at 10x cause thats what i did for testing the cpu?

Basically, find your HTT and CPU limits and run them at the speed you like. Turn the DDR volts up as high as your motherboard will allow. Don't run your CPU volts over 1.55 on air. Set the system to boot from a floppy and boot memtest. If it completes a pass, raise the overclock. Keep going until it fails. Then back it down until a couple MHz from there.

A couple of things to remember:

Run the tightest timings possible. Also, only use a 1T command rate. You have good memory so it should do 1T to a pretty high speed. I like to run my TCCD at 2.5-3-3-8 1T at 276MHz x 2 (DDR552) at 2.9v. Gets great framerates at this speed, and it's 100% stable.

One problem, i havnet updated my system (will do know) and if you read smartass ;) my first post i am running geil value 2 gb so i am not aiming high but would hope to get 218 (same as a 4000+) stable.
