    New Sata2 HDD appears 1/2 size

    Hi,

    I've just installed a 250GB Samsung spinmaster into a brand new system.

    When I came to install win2k, it claimed that the drive only had 131GB partitian.

    Any ideas how to get my missing 120GB ?

    Is the fault likely to be with win2k, the bios, or how I've plugged everythging together.

    I cant believe it's the drive.

    Nothing wrong with the drive, just windows, although I am not familiar with w2k, with xp sp1 solved the problem of only seeing 127gb, is there any service packs for win2k, try that. Also if there is a disc manager in win2k, go in there and allocate the rest of the hd.

    ==edit==

    It may also be your bios, only being able to recognize up to a certain size, what board?

    Angry

    Should have known. My Linux friends will have a field day over this one

    Win2k does have loads of "updates", but as this is a completely brand new install, I haven't got that far yet.

    Thanks for the reasurance though.

    you can use partition magic to create the partition, I don't know if Microsoft fixed this issue with SP4 or not, but they *should* have.. All else fails, you could do worse with getting yourself WinXP Pro SP2 OEM CD which can be had from overclockers for £100.
