Help Fan/Heatsink to silence my (noisy) 7800gt

Hello all,

I made myself a nice quiet PC: Pentium M 760 2Gig (OC to 2.4), 1gig noname Ram, SD11G5 chassis.
Needless to say it was wonderfully quiet, only ever heard the heads on the HD.

Then I went and bought myself a 7800 gt as the reviewers said it was reasonably quiet; unfortunately they probably heard it in a full size case. In mine it sounds stupidly noisy.

So I need a new fan/heatsink, but I don't want to modify the case. The space restriction, however, is causing me problems.
I looked at a zalman 700CU, but it is 30mm tall, I only have space for about 20mm.

Do you have any suggestions?

If you can wait until March 2006, you can buy the new Arctic Cooling Accelero X1. The latest nvidia model is designed for 7800 series cards and is a single slot solution so should fit. I'm not entirely sure of the dimensions but there are some reviews on the net. I'll see if I can find a link.

you could try water cooling

What would you suggest? It's not an area I've experimented, what would you recommend? Are the pumps noisy?

if you go for water cooling, you are gonna end up modifying your case to fit tubes etc.

What manufacturer is the 7800GT? Several makes have problems with fans that stay at 100% and you may be able to overcome it with a bios update. Or failing that, a manual fan controller that sits between the fan and the power supply. From what I have heard (i.e. with my ears rather than what I have read) properly working 7800GTs aren't noisy in normal use.

The 7800 has generaly, a noisy fan!!

It's a gigabyte one, the fan speed controls properly, I have been playing with the speeds of them with riva tuner, but 25% (lowest setting) is still too noisy for my liking. Don't tell the manufacturer, but I stopped the fan using a complicated peice of equipment (my finger), and then watched the temperature climb one degree every couple of seconds.

I'm not saying the fan is particularly noisy per se, just too noisy for me. I don't think the close proximity of the side of my case helps airflow any either.

On a side note the branded sticker was about to fall off so I removed it to find the nvidia sticker underneath, wouldn't have like to get that stuck in the fan.:surprised:

I have two Gigabyte 7800gt's in sli & yes they are noisy. They fan speed controlled in drivers only appears to work on one of the cards. Haven't tried rivatuner's options yet though.

With that height restriction I think you are going to have some troubles fitting a fan. BUT there is some hope-

I could be wrong but every website states the vf900 dimensions as 96x96x30, which doesn't look right anyway looking at the pictures. It could be one solution.

Any idea when that may come out?

Any-body any other possible solutions . . . any-one any ideas regarding watercooling or passive cooling?
