    opteron 165-170

I live in the uk and I was hoping to get a dual core system sometime soonish. Was just wondering if it was worth waiting for the opteron 165 and 170s to become available or just get an x2 3800+

you'd be better waiting for the opterons, as they have 1mb cache per core, compared to 512kb in the 3800 (i believe) plus they'll clock better (if you're into overclocking)

    Depends how soonish soonish is

The above is correct - you have more cache in the opteron, but a slower clock speed for the same price. It's swings and roundabouts - on one hand the 3800 uses less power when cool n quiet is used, and you don't need to overclock the ram as fast for the same cpu speed, but on the other the opteron has more overclocking tolerance.

Both are good really. If you're definately going to overclock by a lot, then go with the opteron. If you're putting it in a server go with the opteron. Otherwise the 3800 is good.

You could be kept waiting forever for the Opty. Get an X2 3800 now, and ebay it when/if the Opterons come back on the market.

TBH, they say "This is a special order item" - and I'd read that as "we don't order them so have no idea what the availability is like. Usually we can get a CPU in a week so we'll say that." They've been saying "next week" on that page for quite a while. I got briefly excited yesterday when I looked on CPU City and they listed the 165s as in stock, but it was an error. Ho hum.

Grab a X2, it's like waiting forever for Opty, they're too rare now.

    Fuji S5 Pro - Nikkor AF 50/1.8 - Nikkor AF 85/1.8
    Epson RD-1

    Film Kit:
    Leica M3 - Summicron 50/2 DR - Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 - M-Rokkor 40/2

    Olympus OM2n - Zuiko 50/2 Macro - Zuiko 50/1.4 - Zuiko 35/2.8

Either chip is pretty great. But if you really wanted an Opty you could order one from a US site. You will pay more for this obviously, but the wait time will be a fraction of what you would for the lack of supply in the UK. Just a thought.

scan says 1-2 weeks before they get opteron 165 and 170s in. Think i'm gonna wait for the opteron and get a scythe ninja and so corsair twin xms 2x1gb pc4000 ram to boot.
