Howdy folks, I was wondering if anyone knows of when AMD are planning to release the AM2 socket cpus? I am hoping to upgrade sometime (by July) to dual core and want to know is it worth waiting for AM2?

intitial release waw first quarter 2006, but now i believe it has been put back to 2nd quater
I believe that it is around the middle of the year. Personally, if you want to upgrade by July, there's no real point getting AM2. It will still be incredibly expensive, and you could pick up some Socket 939 stuff nice and cheap.
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
Im planning to upgrade my graphicsd sometime in the year and then see what the M2 situation is around xmas.

Whilst I agree that socket 939 prices are bound to drop when AM2 is released, it sounds like there will be Semprons released for socket AM2 as well as Athlon 64 parts. This implies there aught to be some quite cheap AM2 motherboards.
It also sounds like the hypertransport will be backwards compatible, in the same way as the S939 chips are similar to the S754. I am sure people like Asrock will slap a nice shiny new socket onto an old, cheap chipset and the result will work fine.
I'm not too excited about it really, cpu's have been slowing up soon much as of late. Last exciting things were dual core but clock speeds arn't going up much at all. Can't say I'm gonna be too impressed by the use of ddr2.
