AMD Athlon64 3000+ temp
I'm running an AMD Athlon64 3000+ Venice Core with a zalman pure copper high end active fan cooler and it's running at about 41 degrees without overclocking. Is this normal? It strikes me as being a bit high really, especially since venices are meant to run really cool and the zalman cooler wasn't cheap! :undecided

Is that idle or at load?
Should def. be sub 30 idle, sub 60 load.

What thermal paste did you put in? The Zalman paste included is not what you consider the best. And by high end active fan cooler you mean which one? 7000B? 7700? or 9500?
7000 and 7700 don't have the heatpipe so they make quite a temperature gradient before discharging heat effectively.
If you are not overclocking I strongly advice you to reduce the CPU voltage. That will help keeping the temperature down too.

Well...no temperature monitor is particularly accurate and 41 degrees is not REALLY hot...but for a venice core I guess it is too high, my 3200+ runs at 24 degrees (well, that's the temperature at the water block but IIRC BIOS monitor does not disagree significantly).
Most likely the thermal paste is poorly applied, probably worth refitting the cooler. I also switched to akasa's silver-based paste from bog-standard generic paste, it dropped the temp by a good few degrees so I would definitely recommend a quality silver paste :)

This is far too high by a mile. My chip, the same (venice 3000) ran at 21 degrees stock fan with no more fans. It can only be down to the following 3 i would have thought. A slightly low spec fan (i doubt), the board quality (i doubt), THERMAL PASTE (very likely!) is there any on it?? Whats your bundle?
Even mine lies idle cooler than that at 33 degrees overclocked at 2.36ghz, around the same speeds as a Venice 3800+.

Bugger, I thought so. I'm pretty sure that it's the paste, cos when I was fitting the cooler it didn't go so smoothly (one of the screws wasn't properly threaded) so I had to wait with it all open and was a little distracted. Also my first time changing a CPU cooler :embarrassed: any advice on when I re-do it? Thanks guys

You need only a TINY amount, spread it VERY thinly using a credit card. It's only there to fill any minute irregularity in the flatnesses of your CPU and cooler base, and to keep the air out. When you position the cooler, try to slap it in place without subsequently lifting it as you can get air bubbles if you do this and the layer of paste is too thick. Try not to slide it around too much, but you can a bit, fit all the screws with it resting in place before you begin to tighten any of them. Er...that's it, easy really :)
