2.1 Speaker set For Games & Music

Can anyone recommend a 2.1 setup That has good clarity and bass and that works well with music and games, My gf doesnt really like my Warcraft noises so i want to be able to listen at relativley low volumes but with good detail. I also want them to do good music though.........Your thoughts would be appreciated.
And the other thing is i currently have a Plantronics USB headset which i want to keep plugged in(it has its own inbuilt sound processor) Will running my onboard sound and that work together or will I have to switch between them?

You have to switch between them I'm pretty sure; I do anyway. What's your budget on the speakers?

I setup a system for a customer the other day and he ordered the Creative i-Trigue 3400 2.1 Speakers. They sounded pretty sweet as well as looking good. Good bass in the sub and 3 tweeters on the desktop speakers should provide ample detail although they aren't that powerful (41w total).

I have budgeted for 100 pounds or so, but regarding switching, if the h/p are on their own soundcard via usb can i run the ac97 at the same time?
Or maybe just a case of unplugging the usb?

You can have them running at the same time but you will have to switch your primary audio over depending on which device you want sound from. You can do this under control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> audio.

I think that is correct but i'll be trying this out later today with my onboard sound/audigy2 soundcard.

BTW £100 budget for a 2.1 system is loads, you should be able to get some really nice speakers for that amount of cash. The Altec Lansing FX6021 are meant to be wicked and are around your budget.

Go for some logitech THX certified ones. Get them for about your budget and they are very good for music and games. Can't remember exact model but think there is only 1 THX 2.1 set(current model anyway)
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

for £100 its a straight choice between the altec lansing mx5021 and the logitech z2300, both available from scan.
Alternatively you could get a creative x-fi soundcard for about £70 and some 2.1 speakers for about £30 (logitech x230)

Hmmm this has me thinking, will a better soundcard make that much difference on 2.1, can anyone tell me if they have tried this.

i don't have an x-fi, nor do i know anyone who has, but creative are banging on about all sorts of technologies it includes. Apparently its got some sort of crystalizer that makes your mp3s sound clearer. There's a couple of different versions but the xtreme music pro is the one that you can get for around £70. The fatal1ty version has something called x-ram that apparently helps games run faster, but this only works on a handful of games at the mo, most notably battlefield 2

With a budget of £100 for 2.1's, do not listen to anyone else here - just go out and buy some Aego M series speakers.

They really have no competition at this price level for music/gaming on your PC. In fact, What Hi-Fi gave them an impressive *****
