O/C on an opteron 144

Hello, I've now built my system, have everything in place.
The cooler I was after wasn't in stock ,and they didnt tell me. They sent a dodgy Antec Vapochill Micro Extreme performance free of changre, but it don't seem to work all that well.

Everythign installed, using arctic silver for the thermal compound.

I'm currently overclocked to 2343MHz stable. Ran prime 95 fine, no crashes. All's good.

Now I know this chip should be able to go further. The stepping is CABNE.

Whenever I go over 269 FSB, it doesn't boot and goes to default steppings.

Any ideas on whats happening? Voltages are Vcore at 1.425 and Chipset is at 1.55

The mobo is an Abit AN8 Ultra. The RAM is Corsair XMS 3200 2.5 3 3 6 timings atm. I tried loosening the timings to 3-3-3-7 , but it didnt help.

I think it's probably time to up the vcore a bit, try it at 1.5v & keep an eye on the temps. Also are you trying to run the mem at 1:1 ratio & most importantly have you dropped the HTT down to 3 x

Yep you'll have to run that memory on a divider, and you can bump the vcore to 1.45-1.50 to see how it fairs (it will be okay to 1.55) but if the rise is only something like 5Mhz then probably not worth it.

I had a CABNE 144 on an Abit AN8 Ultra I could get it fairly high but I hated the 9X multi hence I've now got a 3700 SD :)

Having gotten back today (i work away during the week) I've managed to overclock to 2.7GHz, this is unstable, even when running SuperPi. I get a BSOD around the 24th Loop, and it flashes up too quickly for me to be able to get any information before it restarts. Any ideas reccomendations?

What vcore and memory divider are you using? You should be able to up the vcore to around 1.55v or more with that cooler.

I'm not sure what to believe with this cooler, as it seems pretty crud to me. In the mobo, it states it's running at about 42 degrees on startup, fan on full whack. when i load the Abit EQ in windows, it states 42, then randomly drops about 5 degrees straihgt away? bit random tbh.

anyhow, I have my memory set to DDR 333, voltage at 2.65v with the overclock, it works out back at DDR400, probably above it. Vcore is at 1.5v so im nearly at the limit. My northbridge has been set to 1.8v, highest it'll go, and has been known to help in stability on this board (so I have read)

Runs windows, and tends to run games fine, but it can't finish superpi? =-\

2.7GHz with 9x = 300HTT
300HTT with 333 divider = DDR491

disable "automatically restart" on system failure in System Properties>Advanced>Startup & Recovery - that way you should get to read the BSOD.

Get CPU-Z and look at your memory page to see what speed it is running at.

It's not as simple as FSB and divider any more. It's CPU speed divided by a number worked out by the multi and the memory speed you select. That could be your problem.

Also, don't forget to keep the HTT x FSB below 1000MHz. Keep everything else at as low a speed as possible, just stress the CPU to find the max. speed.

I can't get stable over 2.6GHz with an aircooler on a CABNE, they can be tempremental.

I've managed to get 2.6GHz stable on super pi, 28m 42.672 secs. Going to stress test it tonight, if it does well then I'm just oging to leave it, especially as it's my first O/C i don't want to wreck it.
