    budget RAM updgrade advice please

    Hi all,
    see current system specs <<<<<<<<<<<<

PC is mainly used for FPS gaming (HL2, CS/CZ/CSS, COD2, BF2).
Everything runs fine @ 1024x768 med-to-high details (limited by crappy monitor).

ONLY problem I have is BF2 - takes ages to load maps & join servers & hogs resources in Windows XP after exitting. Number of colleagues have 1Gb & don't have this problem to my extent.

Any RAM recommendations please ?? thinking of 1 x 1Gb stick (only have 2 x slots currently) that could be added to in the future. Will prob upgrade to AMD 64/socket 939, but only when current PC won't run what I want it to.
    Have seen:

    CRUCIAL 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz 184-PIN UNBUFF 128MX64 Memory Modules - 58.99
    Geil Value 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz DDR (Cas 3 8-4-4) with Aluminium heat spreader - 65.77
    1GB PC3200 Hynix DDR SDRAM - 50.47

    Any opinions appreciated ..........thanks

I'd go with the Geil every time out of those 3. It's really good stuff and performs as well as some non-value ram I've seen.

If you are happy to run memory dividers [or whatever socket A motherboards call them] and so are not that interested in the speed of the memory then I would say the crucial, you can reguarly get it really cheap with scan in particular allways seeming to have it on special offer it isnt that much more expensive than some generic memory and you know it will be good quality and not give loads of errors as generic sometimes does. If you do want the speed then, although i have no personal experience with it Ihave only heard good things about its price/performance.

As what ever you buy will not make the transfer to a new system why not the above from scan?

Value Select Corsair does the job for great value. Why not go for 2x 512s? I'm no expert but I heard that it's faster than 1 1gb

I don't like to make a comment like this without having had some experience myself first, but I have to say I've heard quite a lot of bad reports about Geil. As I say though, I've not owned any myself, and all of those reports come from US tech forums. (Has put me off trying it out though).

OTH, I've used plenty of crucial "value" ram, and never had the slightest problem with it, never heard of many complaints (considering how wide its usage is especially).

I wouldnt be looking to get anything hynix based anytime soon since they basically said they were not really intrested in the dram trade anymore (Just gives you the feeling that they don't care in the least about the quality of their chips atm..)

unless you plan to overclock i would just get the cheapest one. You could go for 2 sticks of 512mb, which would have a a slight speed benefit if your system supports dual channel memory. Then again, if you plan to upgrade to 2gb in the near future then stick with your current plan, coz you usually can't run 4x512mb sticks all at full speed. All depends on your motherboard really, what you got?

I've got 2GB Geil and there have been zero issues with it. I have no idea about Hynix but I'm sure the crucial stuff is good. Personally, you can be sure the Geil is reliable, and it's just that little bit more reassuring, when (if?!) something goes wrong you don't have to go "ah, is it my cheap ram?" Not that it matters masses I don't think, maybe just go for the cheapest that is still brand name.

    Thx all so far.......

Socket A Mobo only has 2 x memory slots & NO dual-channel support (see MY SYSTEM <<<<<<<<<<). Thinking of 1 x 1Gb stick for flexibility.
I know things will change, but presumably if I get 3200 speed I 'could' use that with A64 Socket 939 mobo ??

Other option is to get 2 x Twinmos 512 from a m8 who is upgrading - 30-35 for both sticks sounds reasonable ...............

Bloody BF2 ...... only thing giving me problems.

    Yep you could, no problem.

Any ram is good - they should all come with lifetime warrenties these days. It's down to you whether you mind paying a little bit more for ram that looks pretty in your case or not.

1GB is probably the most convenient stick to get for your system. No point getting 2*512MB if you're not going to be able to run dual channel, plus if you ever upgrade your motherboard in the future you can keep the stick (untill DDR2 is completely phased in that is).
