What you could try doing, if you haven't already, is enter device manager in windows. Make sure that under "Display Adapters" you have any devices that aren't your nvidia card disabled. Then restart and try to install the proper drivers again. I'm assuming there's some conflict where the nvidia software is detecting a different device than the one you want it to.

In Device Manager there is no 'display adapters' maybe it is the unknown device under the 'other devices'? should i uninstall this then restart my computer and try to install the driver again?

Yep, take off any display drivers you installed, restart, and then install the latest ones.

I've had a similar issue with earlier nVidia cards and solved it by installing an earlier driver set; nVidia's driver support for older generation products is patchy at best. I suggest trying, say, the 61.77 driver set from HERE and see if that works. Remember to pull the one's you've already installed off the machine via Add/Remove Programs prior to installing, though. Dom's right too. If you don't have the right chipset drivers installed first, your graphics card install will have problems.

Might also be worth using Driver Cleaner (version 3?) to completely clean up all traces of the drivers. Especially important when downgrading to an older driver version.

BTW, where did you get the card from? It's not an old OEM one out of a Dell or Aldi PC is it?
