No forseeable problems or major advantages/disadvantages when intended for this system:

    Athlon 2500+
    2x 256 MB Corsair PC3200
    Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB
    WD 80G SE 7200 Rpm 8MB cache
    Antec SX630II case
    Volcano 9/11 HSF

Run for Internet use, documents, gaming (RTS eg. Age of Mythology and possibly some FPS), and possibly some image/video editing.

No problems at all mate afaik. One thing is though with the NF7 you have to have sp1 installed to use usb/forewire devices otherwise the board will make your system do crazeh things

    Service Pack1 (for Win XP).
You'll need it for pretty much any mobo to get USB2 working.

Btw, if you are comparing ASUS A7N8X series to NF7-S then it has to be the DeLuxe for equivalency.

Abit NF7-S vs Asus A7N8X Deluxe ... just as it's Abit NF7 vs Asus A7N8X. Anyway Corsair is a little overpriced so I'd go for TwinMOS (esp with Winbond) or perhaps Adata or Crucial. I'd go for a Maxtor, Seagate or Hitachi over WD. The Maxtor is much quieter and cooler and certainly on par with the WD. Seagate are very quiet and cool running but slightly slower than WD/Maxtor. Hitachi seem to be winning some friends of late. I'd also get a 120GB over an 80GB. I think someone's selling the Antec SX830 for £60 in 2nd hand section, you may want to check it out as it's brand new (Ebuyer shipped the wrong case). Volcano 11 is decently better than the Volcano 9 and £15 isn't too much to pay. I am nit-picking, nice system.

Okay, once again proving my still substantial (yet fast reducing! ) ignorance, I was checking out the differences between 2 generations/levels of mobo. Those I came across were:

    MCP vs. MCP-T

    Serial ATA RAID

    S-Bracket

    And what's an ACP slot?

MCP is not as featured as MCP-T - you want MCP-T

    Serial ATA RAID.
Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. This version using a Serial ATA controller rather than IDE or SCSI.

S-bracket is a name that MSI use for an (optional?) bracket with S/PDIF ports for digital sound.

    ACP slot
Don't know - sure it wasn't AGP or ACR?

A few minutes research on the internet will expand on this.
    Google is you friend!

ACR indeed! My mistake. Advanced Comm. Riser apparently - whatever that means.

"Better board" - but what's the difference, apart from build quality, which someone would have to take for granted?

Umm, I am going to have to disagree here.
Well, not sure about Vietmam/Phillipines, but some of the prices on price watch that I've seen is lower than the price of the same item I've seen in Taiwan.
And much of a large number of items are from Taiwan..

UK would probably be hard to beat though... 17.5% VAT would make anything expensive.

That said.. I think that mobile phone here are cheaper than in Taiwan

To be honest there is little difference between the boards.
But the MSI looks MUCH nicer than the Abit, it is a red pcb with different colour memory slots and other nice looking features, ideal for a window case. Plus the great extras such as the rounded cables and extra IDE port etc, I already mentioned, and DVD software.
The Asus does have 2 network ports which has to be good.
the Abit has what anybody ?

The Asus and MSI roll in at around 69 pounds sterling ($115).

The Abit slips underneath at 61 sterling ($102).

    Looks don't matter to me.

What I have though is the recommendation of an MSI from a site on which I'm basing my build. Then again, you wonderful people here tend to advocate the Abit.

Echoing my friend above...."The Abit has what anybody?"
With the $10 drop, is that for a reason?
