AMD Athlon 64 3700 VS AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800

Hi,

Right i am a bit stuck into which CPU to go for. I was all set to get the AMD Athlon 64 3700 with DFI LanParty UT NF3 Ultra ( i have AGP GFX ) But after talking with some friends they said i should go for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800.

I use my computer for web design/programming mostly, and also browsing, downloading and the occasional game every now and again. What i want to know is that is it worth me splashing out the extra £100 for the X2 as i don't want to if i am not going to see a big gap between them both in the things i go about doing on my computer.

i think u answered your own question m8 save your cash, your pc doesnt have a big need for power, just get yourself a nice graphics card and u will be fine.

Well i have a 6800GT already which is fine. And money is not really an issue i just dont really want to waste my money if i dont need to.

Id go with the X2 myself. If you plan on keeping the CPU for a long time, then all the more reason to get the X2. They also overclock nicely.

yeah i think that was the wrong advise m8 your now telling him to spend loads more on a cpu which we agreed he didnt need the power to do what he wanted, unless he wants to spend oceans of cash that is, his requirments dont ask for dual core so i wouldnt advise it unless he really needs it, he doesnt sound like someone who wants to spend time overclocking and faffing about with speeds etc just wants a cheap upgrade, mind u its a good time to sell agp cards and get yer money back before they become obsolete and not worth the £250 u paid....

I have one of each and they are both great chips but from the sounds of it the 3700+ will do all you need

Nothing you've listed really will take advantage of dual core. Programming may to a certain extent, but it depends exactly on what you’re doing. If it’s just HTML, then forget it. If you’re using specialist compilers with dual core support, taking an age to compile code, when it would. However, im doubting it’s the latter.

I’m considering going dual core, but I do a *lot* of 3d rendering - in which an improvement would happen.

Ok thanks for your comments guys, In terms of programming it is just php & SQL which are either done online via an FTP Agent / PHPMyAdmin or on my machine using wizywig or notepad. Also for designing would have Photoshop, flash and from time to time Dreamweaver so by the sounds of it i would not benefit from the extra juice. Yea i was thinking of selling the 6800GT and going SLI but to be honest i play games about twice a month because of nagging other half, so i was in 2 minds weather to trade over?

MON, why bump a thread that is coming upto being 2 months old ?

You can always get X2 later when they are cheap and more apps / games take advantage of the 2nd core. If your mainboard supports X2 then you have a decent upgrade to come without the hassle of a complete rebuild.

Edit: 2 months old... probably made up his mind by now
