    Shuttle - Fans in ICE

Hello. I got a Shuttle SFF a few months ago, and am getting a horrible whirrring sound every so often. I believe the fan in the case is knackered (as I have as ilent HeatPipe graphics card). Is it easy to swap the original fans out for another (i.e. are they a standard size), and if so, does anyone have any recommendations for a quiet one.

They are automatically controlled by the mobo as far as I am aware... is that right?

    My System: Coolermaster Centurion 5 (black) case, Intel E6750 Core2Duo, Tagan Easy-Con 530W, Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI, OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC, Samsung SpinPoint 200Gb SATA2 / 2 x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200Gb SATA, 256Mb Sapphire ATI PCI-E X1950PRO, Creative X-Fi Xtreme 7.1, 19" Daewoo W9ZQ Black Widescreen TFT, 4Mb Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Blueyonder) with Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G and DD-WRT firmware.

I recently had the same problem with my SN45GV3 but was able to get a replacement part under warranty. As far as I can determine a standard 80 x 80 x 25 mm case fan with 3 pin connector should work. Obviously the higher the rpm's and airflow (CFM), and the lower the noise output (dB's) the better. I don't know what the supplied one is rated at I am afraid. Good luck.

Thanks for your help. I quite fancied the Akasa Amber one from Scan. will shop around.

I recently changed to a SilenX 80mm one and now the only fan I can hear is the DAMNED chipset one! Grrrr....

Just need to figure out how to make that quieter now....then complete silence will be mine!

TBH it's not that loud, it's just I want it totally silent.....

I was strugglin to find what was making mine noisy. When I took the lid off, it wasnt too loud, but now it is again (with lid back on).

I think its the ICE fan because it only appears sometimes (perhaps when the fan incrases speed when temps go up.

I will swap that out and then take it from there. Was also looking at the PC40 PSU. (Silent-X). Anyone know if this is quieter than the old 200W one, or is it just more powerful?

I had a similar experience with an SK43G. I undid the 4 thumscrews holding the fan assembly in place and re-fitted that assembly. I think the fan just wasn't in straight, and was vibrating slightly.

I gather a few shuttles have 15mm slimline fans, you might want to check before ordering a standard 25mm deep one.

I replaced it with a SilenX 14db fan, and it seems to be a bit quieter. I might also get rid of the Northbridge fan and stick on a Zalman heatsink thing, but not sure.

You might have to literally stick it on too. My ST61G4 does not have mounting holes in the mobo for the northbridge fan (it was my idea to fit a Zalman HS too). So looks you would need Thermal Epoxy to glue it to the chipset. That's before I got to the "will it fit" stage - them Zalman heatsinks are mighty big!

I installed the same one (blue one) to my main PC yesterday (to an A8N-SLI mobo). Was rather fiddly, but seems ok. Its not "stuck down", and is not totally tight to the chi, but seems to work ok.

The 250W Silent X PSU is a lot quieter than the 200W stock psu. Well worth the upgrade.

Yep standard fan and can be changed, just check what depth of fan you have and order accodingly.

Changed mine straight away with a nice quiet but high performing YSTECH fan

Currently looking for a quiet 40mm fan to replace the one on my Northbridge. Any recommendations?

I was looking at getting rid of that fan altogether and getting a Zalman Northbridge heatsink. Not sure If the Shuttle has holes for push-pin things?

    anyone know? mines a SK43G

My Shuttle (ST61G4) does not have any holes - hence me looking at just replacing the fan...other than that you can "stick" it to the chipset using thermal epoxy...

Word of warning regarding the 250W Silent X PSU. Its anything but silent!

I've got one in my SB65G2 and its the main source of noise right now.

My Northbridge is passive, the 6800GT fan has been reduced to 15% (utterly silent) and I have replaced the default 80mm Sunon ICE fan with a Nexus (again, silent).

The 2 x 40mm Fans inside the Silent X PSU (Delta's!!) have been replaced with 2 x 40mm SilenX fans that I purchased from KustomPC's. While these have eliminated that terrible motor whine noise, I can still hear the air rushing through.

These SilenX's are spinning at 4000RPM (Default fans are around 5000RPM) and would be considerably quieter if I could slow them down.

Unfortunately they need 12v to spin up as 7v cable mods result in the fans failing to spin up.

Speedfan doesn't work and even Shuttle's XPC Tool software that states compatability with my Shuttle refuses to work.
