    thinking of a 7800gs

ive got a 6800nu and a s754 3200 clawhammer with 2gig ocz ram at the min. im thinking of selling the 6800 and getting one of these 7800gs's on agp. the question is mainly one of power. i use a 400w antec psu which seems very nice and stable so far but im not sure how much power the new cards need having been out of the upgrade game for a year or so. the other question is whether it is overkill in my system?

    thanks chaps

You will be fine both on power and matching with the rest of the system. I wouldn't go much faster than the gs with that processor, but the 7800gs is a good match.

bollocks, that processor will not be a bottleneck on the latest games, the gpu will.

Its annoying that people think that s754 is dead slow and that the agp interface cant handle the latest games.

The 7800GS consumes less power than the 6 series so your ok.

I received my GS yesterday. The card performs very well (S478 P4 3.4HT) but god the fan is noisy - I'm waiting for info on a Zalman or Arctic Cooling solution to replace it.

Its the XFX Gamer Edition 7800 GS set to 440/1300

Sounds like a raw nerve there, tbh no one said that CPU was going to be a bottleneck or that s754 was slow, nor anything about AGP...

BUT, there are a number of games out there that use the CPU a lot more then others, Quake4 is one of them and that CPU could be a bottleneck for games like Q4 if you want to run the super-high resolutions.

The PSU will be fine, nps there at all.

I would question throwing money at an AGP gfx card right now though, as if you think you may upgrade CPU/mobo at any time in the forseeable future, you most certainly will go for a PCI-E motherboard.....only you know how likely that will be tho

    Well what is this then?

Come on, that cpu would not be a bottleneck if there is a decent graphics card helping along.

Some people do not have the choice but to throw money at an AGP graphics card, due to financial and form factor constraints.

Er.. that's me saying it's not a bottleneck with that GPU.
