why cant i see both cpu's in task manager ? with opty 165

got my new board (asus an32...) and opty 165 dual core but in task manager i can only see one cpu load meter how do i see both ?

could it be to do with the old installation of xp that was nlited for myu old nforce2 board and agp card etc ?

its only temp to back up my stuff then im going to overclock it so if i get errors or anything it wont matter

im going to put on media centre but would i be aswell to just install xp again to find max overclock then put on media center once im happy with my highest and lowest cpu speeds ?

I think that XP sets up single vs dual processor in the HAL at install time, and you are expected to re-install to change it.

No doubt Microsoft would say that you should buy a new copy for your new CPU+mobo, and so are bound to re-install

For a moderate overclock I just let the BIOS do the hard work.

Find the BIOS screen with the CPU clock (under something like "jumperfree settings" from memory) and up it from 200MHz to something like 220MHz (10%) and then every few days when you are sure all is well you could up it a tad more.

If you leave the other settings on their default "auto" then the BIOS will back off the hypertransport multiplier and memory settings automatically to compensate.

My 3000 is a 1.8GHz part (same as your opty I believe) and I have my CPU clock set to 266 to give me a 2.4GHz cpu.

If you really want to push the limit, then you will have to mess with the voltages and at that point I bottle out

    Overclocking guide:

    http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20823

From memory you should easily be able to get to 2400mhz on stock voltage with a 165.

You won't need to change much:

    FSB/Htt to 266

CPU Multiplier to 9 (its already there but just to confirm)

Ram divider to 3:4 (so that your ram runs at 3/4 of the FSB ie at 3/4 of 266=199.5 which is stock for the memory)

it's actually possible to change PC type, using "update driver" in device manager. though "No doubt Microsoft would say that you should buy a new copy for your new CPU+mobo" is correct for OEM XP (check the license)

The thought occurs that weebroonieuk may just not have selected the "one graph per CPU" option in task manager under "View, CPU History"?

right ive found a few things on google and almost got 2 instances of prime running but it wont happen

anyways im hovering around 312x9 at 1.45vmaybe more i cant remember my eyeballs are giving up now but its done on air , think i will get higher on the watercooling setup ? it is a swiftech apogee , thermochill 120.2 rad half inch pipework and some 12v pump cant remember the name of it ?

i get 1 error in prime in the first minute on either core

i know prime aint everything and im the first to preach it but id like it to be this time so any tips to fine tune things to help get it stable

If prime fails within a minute they your system is really not stable. A proper test of stability in prime is more like no errors in 12 hours! If you want a quick test of stability OCCT is quite good and takes 30 mins to complete. After that move on to Prime, S&M etc

I would seriously follow all of the steps in the DFI overclocking guide, its a damn good way to start. I decided with my 144 to follow a proper guide and it took me two weeks of intermittent testing to get things completely prime stable at 3ghz. Before I used to do the set things to random numbers each time and then give up when it didn't work. It took me 2 months to get a decent overclock that was actually stable... The guide way took a lot less than 2 months and I learnt a lot in the process.

The Apogee is a pretty good block but I don't think that watercooling makes that much difference with Opterons. My experience is that you tend to hit a wall no matter what voltage you can give it so its a case of diminishing returns once you get close to the limit. I would see how high you can get before you put the water as the quality of a chip will show it can go well under air. With water you might squeeze another 50-100mhz tops which isn't a massive bonus. However silence is always the best thing about water so that mainly why I started with water as I was so annoyed at living in a wind tunnel....

same here the fan was driving me nuts im gonna try and tweak it using the guide but i wont be doing it for ages as im impatient if need be i will back it off as im never lucky enough to get a 1ghz overclock

especially considering its a dual core so i would have 2 cores running at 2.8 ish or lower if i have to , cant complain really

heres a link to setting up prime for dual core.

    http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/show...ual+core+prime

i got an opty 165 the other day and have been having a time of it with dividers, but managed to get it sorted now.

what divider are you using and what memory do you have?
