    Dead hard drive?

It's a 250gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, can't remember if i got this one from Scan or Aria, but not to worry Maxtor will take it direct.

Usually have it in a IcyBox USB/Firewire case but when i powered it up a few days ago, it seen in windows. The LED on mu USB hub just blinked every few seconds. Tried it in another similar box and get the same results. I don't have a desktop i can try this in, so hooked up a PATA to SATA adapter and plugged it into a CardBus SATA card. The drive spins up, but again, isn't seen in windows.

Is this dead? worked fine in the USB case for months and months before. What i don't want to happen is send it to Maxtor and they say it is fine and charge me for the privelege.

Had a look in Disk Administrator and there is nothing there either, so it's not that it just isn't being added to explorer.

    thanks

A quick google for "maxtor diagnostic utility" got me the powermax diagnostic program.

Not sure from the notes if it will run on your setup, but worth a try.

ok, this is odd. turns out it is my laptop that is messed up, or XP at least.

Neither of my USB drives will appear when plugged into it, but they work fine in another PC.

I need to fine out why this is. Don't want to do a format, but i suspect it may be needed
