Koolance Thermal Encapsulate..

Koolance HD waterblocks come with a 2 part resin thermal encapsulte material to fill the gaps between block and HD. It sets to a rubber like state and so is not reusable!
I recently upgraded to sATA and so need more of this stuff but i cant find anywhere in the uk which sells it. I made a few enquiries to uk suppliers of koolance asking if they wud consider stocking it as there must be a demand for it and got no replies.

So ive done a bit of research and i think ive found some suitable material but im not sure about the encapsulate constant and thermal conductivity good enough.

Do you think one of these is suitable? They come as two-part resin packs so no measuring is needed!

Koolance do sell replacement packs but they cost $15.99 + $40p&p = £+38 and the packs are small!

and another idea, if i was to get a larger amount and spread it over the bk off my motherboard so it makes contact with the motherboard tray would that improve cooling? My system is fully watercooled with only one 92mm fan (very slow) blowing just below the cpu. It an Abit AT7-MAx2 and the system thermistor is postitioned right next to the northbridge, which is stupid to put it there because originally the northbridge fan wud be blowing on it so giving false temp readings, and it shows temps of 44C. Its near plenty of coils and Mosfets. Would this reduce the temperature?

What was the RS part number ? I'm looking at going watercooling (I've posted about it), but am looking for a harddrive cooler encapsulate if I go for something other than the Asetek waterchill kit. Even if I did, it looks like it's hard to come across those encapsulate kits anyway :(

I would of thought being closer to these would create a higher temp in that area... these things are playing with volts afterall :p

i ordered part no 552-668 afterall.

well fast delievery! ordered at about 6:30pm yesterday and it came next day at ten!!

i spent two days surfin various shops to find a suitable replacement material and found RS (www.rswww.com) from an american manufacturers destributors page.

Gonna test this material later this week so i will get bk and let u know how it performs!

lol yeah i know, i was trying to think of a way of reducing the system temp of my comp due to the fact it fully watercooled and doesnt have the best flow thru the case. Only the psu's fan ejecting air and a side case fan modded so it silent to blow in. I meant will the idea reduce the temp not would the close mosfits reduce the temp! Ive already epoxyed heatsinks onto them too.

Please do let us know how it works, and how you'd recommend sticking if to the harddisc underside.

Also, what watertight heat plate are you going to use ? (The flat plate filled with water and connected to the system with two tube connectors) Would you still get the koolance harddrive cooling kit minus the encapsulates of course ? Or have you seen something else ?

Let me know. Just wanna make sure that stuff doesn't short out harddrives before I order some ;) :p

yeah i got the koolance HD cooling kit months ago, dont bother with the second HD cooling kit it is poo. Thing is i changed my HDs recently so need new thermal encapsulate to use.
The koolance HD coolers work well and do cool the sides of the HDs too but the best thing abou them is the price!

So are you saying that they're the best price/performance ratio for a watercooling harddrive casing ? From you post, I'm guessing that you're still using them with your new encapsulate because you changed harddrive.

In your view, how does the rs encapsulate compare to the koolance ? Easy to paste to your hd ?

the second HD cooling kit as just a sheet of metal and extra paste. The idea of that is u turn the second HD upsidedown and fix it to the bottom of the first one! Very messy!

I hv three HDs stacked ontop of each other with two blocks in between like a triple sandwich!

The koolance 'paste' is a two part mix which sets to a rubber texture which is why if u change HDs u need more of it. I will test the nu stuff tonight and put some pics up to show u.

The reason i got koolance originally was just cos its the cheapest HDs blocks i cud find, the drives dont make massive amounts of heat so performance wasnt an issue. The plan is to encase the finished HDblock in sound proofing which is the only reason i wanted to watercool them anyway.

Ahh. Now I see how that second drive thingy goes on, I agree it's a little messy. I don't like the idea of having the drive upside down: it takes the nice symmetry out of the connections and won't be so easy to keep the cables tidy.

it's a shame you can't put the second harddrive's encapsulate on top of it, thereby keeping it still upright... I hadn't seen the flash animations on their website. Thanks for pointing that out!

Please post pics for the rs encapsulate, now that you're a pro using the stuff :D

havnt forgotten but had to put it on the backburner cos of lack of time and im waiting for hose clips to come,
want to do a proper before and after test.

also got some 25mm soundproofing material to encase the finished caddy and will post prob towards end of this week with pics etc

Well it been going ok..

The drives fit very closely to the waterblock so small hose clips were needed, koolance ones are very hard to come by, this shows the closest alternative! Had to use epoxy to seal the pipe, just applied it, waited till it had almost set then used the hose clip.
The spiral wrap is to stop the pipe from kinking!

I mixed it up but it was very liquid so i left it under a desk lamp and waited around 40mins til it was think enuf to use.

The two blocks were screwed on and the last drive was placed on the bottom of the stack with a thin layer of epoxy. The plastic strips keep the drives in line and the tape was extra security while it 'cured'

Next was the sound absorbing foam, sticky backed and foil fronted, it came in 1200*800 sheets. It was cut to shape then stuck on and the edges taped with electrical tape.
While doing one side i placed a temp probe onto the side of one of the sata seagates. plenty of artic silver too

A close-up, next step is to build a molex extension for the non-sata drive and then i can seal up the end.

No reading yet as it is still work in progress, ive left the epoxy for two days to 'aquire its themal properties', it has set solid so no going bk now!

Good news is the drives still work!

Tomo i will connect up the waterworks and see how hot the seagates get!

My case is a v770 which i removed all the HD racks from.
So it fits puurfectly!
The wires/pipes/cables will be the hard bit to tidy.

Thanks a lot for those piccs. Looks like you really are a Doc. Just hope it stays cooler than the boiler of your steam engine! :p

In terms of quantity, how does the RS stuff do? Is it enough for two drives or just one ?

I'll prolly spend some cash soon and quiten my pc with watercooling. Where did you get your soundproofing alu stuff from? Seems like a neat alternative to all the foamy / mat stuff you normally get from modder retail outlets...

the epoxy stuff does exactly wot it says on the tin.
the only thing about it which is not ideal is it set very solid! so once applied there is no going back, the waterblocks could probly be levered off the bottom of the drives but there is a large damger of breaking the pcb on the bottom.

if ur thinking of watercooling harddrives the koolance encapsulate is ideal, its just a shame its not readily avaliable in the uk (unless a new waterblock is bought!)

the waterblocks do cool the sides of the harddrives supprsingly well, others have mentioned that cooling the sides is the most important bit and their are right but the koolance blocks do make good contact to the bottom of the sides so the harddrives stay cool.
personally i wouldnt bother cooling your harddrives unless u intend to encase them in insulation too. My comp is watercooled for silent running with performance as a welcome addition.

its intended to sound proof industrial machinery, much cheaper than specific computer sound absorbsion kits and much more versatile!

Aha, I wondered about that foam. Looked like the Industrial Stuff :) I also thought it would be cheaper than the premium price you pay for "PC" sound absorption foam. I'll take a look at that stuff. I'll search around a bit on the rs website and see what I find.

Edit: Is 370-5809 the stuff you got ?

It sounds like you think the coolance encapsulate stays more rubbery than the rs stuff making it possible to take it off if ever you want to.

I'm back in the UK now so I'll prolly spend some time soon changing my lill' rig.
