So about this G5 mouse then...

Hi all,

I recently made the decision to get hold of a decent gaming mouse as I've been stuck with my humble MS optical effort for the better part of 3 years and its not that great anymore (shhhhh anyone about to say 'was it ever?!?').

So, on reading some reviews the G5 seems to kick all and sundry into touch. But I was wondering if I really need one rather than a more modest 518 or Razer Diamondback?

Would I notice the difference between a G5 and a 518 (1600DPI?) or something similar? Is there really some glitching at higher resolutions with earlier models?

I play a bit of HL2 and FarCry, and FEAR is on the list as soon as my new PC arrives but I'm not an FPS junkie and am worried that the crazy res is just overkill for me?

One thing - I don't want a cordless mouse as anything with more batteries in it is just a pain in the *ss. And you could probably fry an egg in my lounge from the number of transmitting devices strewn about the place. So that's that.

Any of you got experience of the G5 and other models?

I use an MX1000 logitech cordless mouse, and although I know you said you don't want a cordless I think the flexibility is really worth it, It comes with its own recharging stand - good for storing it and battery life is roughly 3 - 4 weeks of every other evening use.
it really is an excellent rodent for browsing and gaming.

Well I went froma cheap £10 optical to my G5 and all i can say is wow... Seriously its fantastic on every point. its incredibly comfy, its fit my hand great so i can play for hours with no probs. It is insanley accurate, even if you don't sue the top DPI (mines at 1200 most of the time) the extra accuracy and feel from the laser is noticeable, I hate using normal mice now. I orignally thought the adjustable weights were a bit gimicky but now I reckon they're brilliant, you can get it set-up exactly how you like. I've tried the Copperhead and Diamondback since and I can tell you its no contest, this is the ultimate mouse, Mate tried mine and immediately ebayed his Copperhead to get it. You won't regret it!

All about personal preference - its more about how the mouse fits your hand than weights and crazy DPIs. I use a copperhead at the moment, it suited me better than the MX1000 I had before.

Got me the MX518 just over a week ago, very very impressed (I did have a standard Logitech optical mouse). Two buttons on't side against the G5's one button (I use one for reloading and one for previous weapon in CS:S) and 1600dpi is more than enough for anyone, I personally can't use much over 1000.

Plus you can use the tenner you save (over the G5) to buy a quality mouse mat, I recommend the SteelPad QcK.

on the dpi count i have a g7 which has a crazy 2000 dpi and i cnt use it,it takes like 1` inch of hand movement to cross the screen so i woild say that 1600 is the best as im used to it and its fine i have used a g5 and they are very nice just at the time i wanted to get rid of wires so igot the g7. all great mice imho

I have a Razor DiamondBack (optical) and also a Razor Copperhead (laser).

Both are EXCELLENT mice (as they should be at the price ) but over extended sessions I start to get RSI due to the fact they are long mice that make you stretch your hand a little.

I haven't used the Logitech mice yet but my understanding was that they are also fairly large compared to the original MS optical mouse, which was very confortable to hold.

If you get the chance, go out and have a play with a few and see which you prefer.

I have the G5, and think it is great. The accuracy is perfect. I use 2000DPI, and just reduce the sensitivity to a really low value in windows (after all the high DPI is the products main selling point... may as well use it =]). The mouse 'feet' are really smooth making the movement feel more fluid. It has definatly improved my accuracy in FPS, however now i have nothing to blame now when i miss =]

The only negative thing (other than price) is it only has 1 side button... a bit annoying since I was used to 2.

I guess I can't comment, I still use a rollerball mouse for games as I've yet to find an optical that has the same accuracy/responsiveness

Just need the huge monitor now! Wonder how many inches it would take at 2000dpi to move across 1920 pixels???

Cheers for the views - using the G5 here and it's ace! Very impressed and I'm struggling to get used to 2000dpi as I type

I thought the weights were a complete gimmick when I read about them but they really do make an appreciable difference, mainly because the teflon feet on this thing are absolutely incredible. They'd slip down a superglue-covered sheet of flypaper. Ridiculous!

My only criticism is toward build quality, in the choice of one thing...

Almost everything about this mouse is perfect.
- The sensor speaks for itself. incredible.
- The ergonomics of the mouse are ideal (I'm a lefty but not with mice thankfully)
- The rubber surround is great and you get perfect purchase on it
- The button pressure is spot-on
- The tilt and scroll wheel is among the best I've ever tried,
- The weights work!
- The quality of the non-stick feet are superb to boot

...but I'm struggling to go for the brushed-aluminium-style panel that comprises the spine of the mouse. It feels a little 'plastic-y' for want of a better word.

I think initially it's a little too-finely-machined and I'd prefer a slightly rougher texture on this panel. As it is, running a finger crossways over the mouse is rather like running your nails down a blackboard and sort of of sets my teeth on edge! But that said I'm already adjusting to it!

Anyway, in summary its without a doubt the best mouse I've ever used. HIGHLY recommend it! And the quality of the thing is great (just try rattling it when you've clipped in the caddy full of weights - not even the trace of a rattle! Superb!)
