Good network storage

Im looking for a good external drive to put on a network where a server can backup to it every night.

Obviously speed & reliability are the key things, can anyone recommend any products?

Are you looking for a basic NAS box, RAID Nas box or network attached tape?

For basic NAS i hear good thinks about the Buffalo Linkstation and the Maxtor network drives.

For RAID Nas have a look at Infrant (http://www.infrant.com) their new ReadyNAS NV is very cool and their ReadyNAS 1000 is a 1U rack system.

for more ideas look at the selection on Scan, unfortunitely i don't really know anything about any of them.

I wouldnt touch buffalo, a lot of sites have stopped selling them & we have had so many failures, plus there not mac compatible!

Looking at a Synology box as it needs to sit on a lan, raid isnt important at the moment, but that could change.

My knowledge of the linkstation only extends to the fact that you can easily hack them to include other apps and services on the embeded linux it runs. I had no idea about the lack on Mac support.

The Infrant boxes, although expensive, can be set up with a single drive to start with and will grow to use additional disks as they are added. With two disks you get a mirror and three of four you have something like RADI-5 (it isn't true RAID-5, but you get n-1 disks of space and parity)
