    Worth It?

I currently have two 512Mb sticks of Elixir DDR400 RAM, and have been looking with interest at the 2x512Mb Corsair Value Select RAM on offer at Scan. What I want to know is:

    a) Is it worth swopping the Elixir out and putting the Corsair in? Will the benefit be worth the difference between the cost and what I can sell the Elixir for on eBay?

    b) The Corsair is 'matched pair', what difference does this make?

    c) would it be worth leaving the Elixir in and running it with 2Mb, knowing that any speed benefit of the corsair would be negated by the shoretcomings of the Elixir?

    Thanks in advance...

    a - No
b - they are gauranteed to work together in dual channel. 90% of the time unmached pairs work just as well
c - 2Gb of ram would be benificail if your a gamerbut you would be better selling the elixir and buying a 2gb kit

Yep, though at the moment I think BF2 is the only game that actually has a decent speed benefit from 2GB, the rest are almost as fast with 1GB, but in a years time...

I would sell the elixir ram, and get 2x1GB sticks - you won't have to run 2T then.

There was a review on some website (sorry cannot recall at the moment), and newer games are the ones that benefit from 2GB. Fear is one that comes to mind. 2Gb was quite a lot better with that, load times and fps. However, older games do not seem to take advantage of the extra ram. Would be a nice to have, but not essential for the next 12 months.

Yeah, newer games like Battlefield 2, Fear, etc benifit quite largely from 2Gb of RAM, so it may be good to do.

Ironically, the Elixir stock RAM you have was awarded in Custom PC magazine during a big memory shootout as the best non-gaming RAM, both in price and performance (faster than Corsair Value select).
