    HDTV and LCD TV's

My over indulgent dad want's to get himself a 40" lcd tv but it only has one HDMI input. I assume one input would be plenty as the high definition signal would be digital and not suffer degradation from an external splitter but the question is this.

Will he have to unplug any future sky tv box with HDMI in order to plug in any future HD-dvd player? Will having only one HDMI end up like having a tv with only 1 scart socket?

Does it have any DVI ports on it?

HDMI and DVI are identical, just a different shaped plug (and HDMI can carry audio too). HDMI-DVI converters are lossless because the standard is the same.

Having a DVI port (and audio plugs that I'm pretty sure it will have!) means you could plug in any 2 HDMI or DVI devices you wish.

    actually

dvi cant carry the copy protection stuff that hdmi carries, so some dvd players etc would refuse to output it..

if you're looking at the sammy tft (i would) - it has vga, component and hdmi - all 3 of these are capable of carrying an hd signal - i'd be surprised if decent hd-dvd (or blue ray, whatever) players dont all start arriving with component out as well as hdmi..

it's possible for DVI to carry HDCP (copy-protection) data, but not all TVs support this.

since the only two connections with HDCP support are HDMI or DVI-D/HDCP, don't expect high-def formats like blu-ray to play back in full resolution over non-protected connectors like YPbPr

meh, HDCP is just YaPCPS (Yet another Pathetic Copy Protection System). It absolutely does 0 damage to black marketeers.

true. but it DOES do what it's intended to do, which is harm consumers
