    Question Upgrade, worth it?

    Currently have the following setup

    8KNXP Ultra
    P4 3.2Ghz 800
    1GB (2x 512) Corsair PC3200XL PRO
    X800XT PE 256MB
    2x 36GB Raptor
    Audigy Plat

Thinking of upgrading to the following

    Opteron 146 OEM
    Arctic Cooling Silencer64 Ultra TC
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D or so I dont have to change graphics cards, i could use the Asrock Dual Sata PCI-E/AGP board.

Now do you think the corsair will clock well with this or will i need something else?

Maybe change it for 2GB of something half decent?

Also would need a new PSU and graphics card.

Is it worth the upgrade before I start selling parts of my pc?

    Thanks

Not much point in upgrading IMO - you'll see a minimal performance increase, if at all. Can't remember which tech site did the comparison, but one of them did a CPU comparison between Semprons, P4s, A64x2s etc recently. The conclusion they drew was that modern games (Fear, Doom3, BF2 etc) aren't really CPU limited. Its the graphics card that makes the difference. Unless you're trying to play games are ludicrous resolutions with full AA/AF, that X800XT will still be find for current games.

Not worth it imo, not with Conroe/AM2 so close... have a go at overclocking your CPU instead. I managed to ramp my 3.2C up to 3.7+GHz, I'm sure you could too That might give you a noticeable performance boost in games and stuff.

I was wondering that, i've tried overclocking but this board isnt really upto it....

I was just thinking of upgrading due to the cheapness of the Opteron, 64bit, SSE3 etc..

The x2 chips are out of my price range & we will just have to wait & see with the AM2.

i'll hang fire then for the time being...
