Choosing between an 80gb Western digital/80gb Seagate!

Alright, first off, I'm not disputing the efficiency differences between SATA I and SATA II. My mobo doesn't even support SATA II. I'm having a tough time choosing between the Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA II ($70.50 with SATA cable and shipping) or the Western Digital WD800JD 80gb SATA 150 ($63.50 with SATA cable. I was wondering about the speed differences between the 2.

I have an Asus P4C800 Deluxe Mobo, so they'll both be running as SATA 150. The one thing that really appeals to me about the Seagate is the fact that they have a 5 year warranty as opposed to WD's 3 year. I keep hardware for a long time, so it matters to me. I'm upgrading from an old WD 30gb that has served me well for a little over 5 years. Though, I've heard that their quality has supposedly declined since then.

I guess I mainly want to know the speed differences between the two. I couldn't find a juxtaposition between the two. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Both are very good Hard Drive Makers. You won't go wrong with either. I have a Seagate one and it does the job. Nice warranty too.

Seagate.... had bad experience with 2 Western Digital Drives.
Seagate drives are quieter as well. Not sure on the performance difference between them.

MAte hd had died on him needed to recover his DATA and had sent it to good org to fix it up they say Seagate are very reliable drives stick to them.

I would go with the seagate with this in mind and the fact it has SATA 2 for future proofing and good transfer speeds.

SATAI will be as valid today as it will when SATAV is a standard, why people think SATAII has any significant advantage over SATAI is beyond me, the limitations of disk i/o isn't the interface, its the disk rotation speed.

I am sure people will be as biassed as I am in their preferences. I would rather write my data on wet toilet paper than use a Seagate, but I know others will have similar horror at Western Digital

It really does not matter, they are all prone to failures, get the cheapest with the best warranty, the only time it matters as to which brand to buy is when one of them is going through a bad patch with failures, when it happens you will see it on most forums. It is also worth researching any chipset/board compatibility issues. Last time I read seagate had bought maxtor, so there goes the competition

I've had 2 Seagate SATA drives crap out on me, and a few WD. I'd trust Seagate's SCSI drives, but for SATA? I use Maxtor. Over the years I've found their IDE and SATA drives to be rock solid.

Whichever is cheaper. There's nothing in this range that makes disk x better than disk y.
They're all 80Gb, they're all 7,200RPM, they all have 8Mb caches, they all have SATA interfaces, they all have NCQ support... They're all the bloody same.

Someone of the THG forums told me that Seagate only gives a 1 year warranty to OEM products. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, does this apply to WD as well?

Seagate has a 5 year warrenty.
Samsung has a 3 year warrenty.
Maxtor has a 3 year warrenty.
Hitachi has a 3 year warrenty.
Western Digital has a 3 year warrenty (Except for the Raptor range, which has 5 year warrenties).

Also you cant really compare drives which have different sizes due to data density differences.

I would personally go for the seagate.

Well, the Maxline (Maxtor) series is 5 years, so are the RE series (WD).
