but the question is...
Do I go for 2 x 80Gb SATA and stripe them, or do I get a 250Gb SATA?
About the same price...

I'd vote for the single drive. I don't think the extra speed of RAID0 is worth the risk of terrible unrecoverable errors (and smaller capacity, in this case).
Another vote for 250Gb, i prefer space over speed.
Primary kit:
Fuji S5 Pro - Nikkor AF 50/1.8 - Nikkor AF 85/1.8
Epson RD-1
Film Kit:
Leica M3 - Summicron 50/2 DR - Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 - M-Rokkor 40/2
Olympus OM2n - Zuiko 50/2 Macro - Zuiko 50/1.4 - Zuiko 35/2.8
That's fine then, sorted!
Thanks
if you go for one of the new hitachi drives and enable sata2 they're pretty damn fast anyway
Aren't they the IBM ones? The ones that just die on you for no reason?Originally Posted by chazt

No the Hitachi is good, voted top in CPC and very reliable and fast, beats 2 80gb's hands down.

I'll get myself one of those then. Does cache make a big difference? How about SATA II?Originally Posted by RDL
I have 3 Hitachi's (2 in RAID 0) and they are the pwnerer of drives
You can enable "SATA II" for all its worth using a tool from Hitachi but I see no difference. NCQ is good tho
They really are very good. even beat my mates RAID 0 76gb Raptors for burst speed tests in HD Tach
Yep i have RAIDed Hitachi's they beat pretty much everything when properly setup, I score higher in HDTach than a SCSI drive.

Ended up getting the Samsung Spinpoint 250Gb czo it was on today only.
That'll keep me going for a while
Enabling "SATA II" isn't going to make any difference at all though, really.Originally Posted by chazt
yeah tbh i can't really tell the difference, but I don't do benchmarks. Whenever I read reviews it says there's a big difference
According to most places, enabling NCQ gives you a boost in some applications, and actually slows some others down. The extra transfer speed is, in all probability, completely worthless at the moment - I doubt drives even exceed ATA133 speeds.
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
I'll enable it just so I can say I have it
