Last gen raptor - still good?

How does the last gen raptor HDD compare to the new SATA 3GB/s 7200 drives for speed?

Als how does it compare to new gen or raptors. lol i should probably google this (and i will) but i would think its is usefull for other people too.

EDIT: I know that SATA 3gb/s does not make HDDs faster in practice but i mean that the new 7200 drivers are getting quite fast)

What do you mean by last gen? 74GB ones?

74GB Raptor still hold it's own against the latest 7200RPM drives, especially if you are looking at straight sequential read/right (so I'd say they are still better boot drives).

That said, unless you can find them cheap-ish, the modern 7200RPM drives will provide much better value for money.

I think it is a bit of a shame that the latest 150GB Raptor only comes in 150GB flavour. It makes them too expensive IMO, and while I value the speed, it is too big for a boot drive (and wasteful for plain data).

Theyre still good drives for a boot drive evern the 36Gb ones which can be picked up second hand for under £50

admittedly they are quite expensive, but to get a faster boot drive, you'd have to go SCSI, and thats very expensive, unless you have SCSI onboard, which is unlikely! I have a 74GB Raptor for my only HD, as I don't download much crap, and it's still stupidly quick even though i haven't formatted in about 6 months!.

I think the 74gb's are the best raptors out there cos they're slightly quicker and quieter than the 36's, while not being stupid money like the 150's...

It's obvious what they're up to - they're gits, and they know most people just want a fast boot drive, but they want to temp you up the range with higher specs on the larger models....

actually ,raptors were designed for the server market, but have managed to find a niche with enthusiasts. They cost a lot more to produce than bog standard HDD's, hence the high price. They lie in the middle area between normal HDD, and SCSI.
