ati to nvidia change = crap performance :( HEELP!

i had an ati 9800 pro, it still gave ok performance but had a large back pay thing so upgraded to a 7800 gs however, it occasionally works properly (random) giving 5500 in 3d mark '05. most of the time i get 770!!! i have uninstalled raddy then used cat uninstaller to clear remnants. i have tried reinstalling dx9, nforce drivers + latest gfx driver. my system is a dfi lanparty ut250 gb, mobile 3400 athlon 64; 1gb mem & win xp pro sp2. any1 with suggestions please share!! cheers, rich. oh, yeah; any1 know what bios settings i should use? side band address e.t.c

Start from scratch - install windows etc afresh, takes a while but got to be better than trying to hunt down all old ati drivers - btw i went from 9800p to 7800gt and noticed a massive difference!

Uninstall drivers using their own utility then use Driver Cleaner

    http://www.drivercleaner.net

    Then install the new Dets.

If that doesn't work then a format may be the best option.

Do you lot work for PC world?

Completely reinstalling windows might work, but he should not have to.

Make sure you use driver cleaner (in safe mode) to get rid of any left over Cat files and remove the current Det's too. Also, have you checked the cards HSF and your temps etc? If it over heating, the card might be throttling (running at a lower speed as a fail safe). I take it this is an AGP card and that you plugged in the extra power lead if it needed one?

Apart from 3dmark, what is performance like in games generally?

Also, what PSU do you have?

If all else fails, reinstall. But it's nice to find out the cause sometimes for future reference.

Drivercleaner has always worked for me. Have heard many say they have troubles with Nvidia drivers.

I format with evry hardware change, and usually about 4 times in between. Its not a big deal, and takes around 30-60 mins, then the same to get the game you play most reinstalled (then all night to patch the bleedin thing!!)

I'd recommend a drive cleaner and also make sure no Ati related stuff is still in start up. This may not be related but when I changed over from an X800 to 7800GT I updated my mobo bios and cleared the cmos which resulted in a huge boost in 3dmark scores and games performance. hth.

to me that sounds like you have lots of other apps running in the background most of the time proably loads of junk and bloatware.

I do think a fresh install is a good idea, BUT first: What do you have in the bottom right corner of your screen? How many things run all the time?

    Also, try this:

    Start, Run
Type "msconfig" in the box, and hit return.

When the software opens, go to the right hand tab at the top, that says "Start Up" and then count how many things are in it.

If you can do a Screen Shot do so (With that box open, Hit Print Screen, then open Paint Shop Pro or similar, and hit Cntrol and V. Upload to http://imageshack.us/ for us to see.

here's the picture. not much I think it might be heat as it seems better when first turned on. taking side panel off made no difference. gonna try cool bits & see if i can under clock (might help) apart from bios (it's disabled) i cant find an option to slow if over heating. as a VERY last resort i will try formating. any1 wanna buy a nearly new 7800 gs?

If heat was the issue you'd notice more graphical anomilies rather than snail paced performance. I would say reinstall Windows. hopefully that will iron out any potential conflicts.

hl2 (via steam) doesn't need reinstalling if you've got it on a different partition - just resinstall steam and point it at the old directory and all is well
