I knew it was a mistake to sit on the table, it turns so quickly it makes me feel dizzy.

tbh it's about time Intel pulled something special out of the hat. Is the change to AM2 enough for AMD compete? And while the comparison is unfair, being current gen vs next gen, I don't recall seeing anything truely inovative in AMD's road maps, but one never knows. Interesting times indeed.

Considering that Dothan has been owning in 3dmark 2001 for a while on rubbish motherboards it's no surprise to see on fast motherboards and with some of the power requirements increased that Conroe is so good.

I may even be tempted to get an intel chip in the future but by the time that decision comes around again i'll probably be looking at the next next generation . I may have missed this but were there any reports of how the processors faired heat wise, have the intel chips dropped there heat output?

Do you think that DDR2 will really give AMD a performance increase? I suspect we will see a 4 to 6% performance increase max.

Also remember we are testing mid range here against AMD's current high end....

The Intel CPU is 65W TDP (half that of the current generation) so lower wattage, lower clocks, higher performance.

Conroe is Intel's next Generation Desktop CPU - Launching August at latest this year....

... We got a heap more coming on this but this is impressive....

Its called Intel Core - and runs on 975 and other chipsets - its LGA775 too....

EFI should be replacing the BIOS around the time of the launch right?.. I assume that's what Intel's waiting for considering they already have these chips churning off the production line for Apple.

Numbers are all good and i'm interested to see Intel striking back. But i'm suprised Hexus didn't cover the WHY part of it.

Why is the new Intel so good, A quick read up elsewhere seemed to indicated a 14 stage pipeline, (much closer to AMD's 12 stage) meaning the huge drop in Ghz speed obtainable. But also a massive improvement in power consumption (and hence heat reduction)

There are some detailed documents out there on the new microburst architecture too, being able to handle 2 x86 instructions per cycle, is definitely an interesting concept, and i can certainly see lessons learnt from the failure of prescott, while taking the benefits of the Pentium-M series.

I'll be interested to see on futher inspection down the line where the true benefits come. I for one still feel that the integrated memory controller of the amd64 series is still one of the key components. I'm hoping the am2 will extend this nicely to make the best benefit of the ddr2 memory. Something i'm still not convinced the conroe will handle ddr2 as efficiently as amd might.

I've been an AMD boy ever since I built my first computer, but this does make it tempting to go for Intel. All depends on prices though.
