I have a hp Laserjet 1020 printer connected to a pc in the LAN. Its a p4 with 256 MB RAM running Windows 98. The printer is connected to USB port. It works fine when not shared and used for local printing, but when it's shared and we try to print from another pc it hangs the local pc or the data gets stuck in the spooler and will only start printing when the printer is restarted.
I have installed the printer on another similar pc and the story is repeated.
Kindly suggest.
are you trying to print from an xp pc, or w2k? if so i believe you will need to install the 98 drivers on those pc's (not sure on this though)
NO, I am printing from other Win 98 pc's.
There is another similar printer in my office installed on Win xp ( earlier on Win98 ) and it caters to about 10 p.c's printing from LAN and has never had a prob. While this one has been looked at by the printer engineer and also sent to HP for repairs but they did not face the same prob.(or most probably they did not test it in a LAN. )
firefox, I would highly recommend using a computer (any computer) with Windows 2000 or XP installed on it as a host for the printer. Windows 98 networking is **** at best. (sorry for the language). If there's no 2000 or XP hosts around, look into Linux, and Samba.
That's not an option for me. It's an office enviornment and the printer is allocated to a user with win98 so the location and OS is fixed for now.
The best part is that another similar printer which was installed on another win98 pc never had the same issue when printing from LAN.
I just can't pinpoint the problem, whether it's the printer, the OS, or the PC's hardware (i.e memory , usb port etc.).
P.S I also tested this printer on another similar pc with win 98. same prob. Called HP for support but it did not help.
