    whirrrrrrrrr *click*

is what I hear when I cold boot - seems to eminating from my nice new 160g SATA. I POST, get past the SATA BIOS thing and just before windowsXP kicks in, whirrrrrrrrrr click, whirrrrrrrrrr click

press the reset button, and usually everything is peachy. I hope it's not a head crash, but I think maybe my PSU is giving out. Anyone know if this could be possible?

    I'm running an Asus A7N8XD with 2100+, Corsair 2x256 PC2700, Ti4200 128mb, DVD, CDRW, 160g SATA, and 2x80g ATA133 - oh and 2 case fans

All this is being powered off an Antec True Power 380w max - I've tried a different SATA drive to see, but it also clicks - I've pulled out the connectors for the opticals, and everything seems ok so far...

Might be... Don't know what else it would be. If you've tried different harddrives I'd believe that is the problem... Even though I think a Antec 380 should be enough for that system. You have another PSU available to test?

Funny noises and computers always makes me paranoid. It might be worth trying a different PSU

All the HD's are Maxtors 7200RPM 8mb cache jobs - it does seem weird that a 380w PSU can't take it - i'm gonna borrow my brothers 450w one, see if it makes a difference

What make is your PSU ?
If its one that came with your case, a Q-tec, or a generic Ebuyer one, there is a high chance thats your problem.
Me and XTR have both had this issue (it sounds like the same one), and both of us RMA'd our drives to Maxtor, only to later figure it was the PSU

    Antec TruePower 380w
    website

Taking the opticals made little difference - instead of making it to the XP loading screen, it made it to the desktop, and then started clicking.

I've taken out everything apart from the SATA drive, and so far so good

Very strange, thee are a very good make of PSU's !

If its working after you've taken everything else out though, it could be a duff PSU, or one on its way out totaly.
The best way to tell is to try it with a totaly different one .

    Not if its his PSU

I doubt Antec take end user RMA's, but a mail to them wont hurt anything

Got confused with all this talk of hard drives.....

Try RMA'ing the PSU is probably a better idea in this case then....

monitored the rails with MBM5 - the +5V kept dropping below the "5% threshold" - I'm not sure whether that's mean to be 10% though. Dabs wouldn't RMA, but to be fair it was bought in 2002, gonna see what Antec say

Anyone make sense of the following results?
    Code:

you will probably damage the hard-disk so i'd advise taking action asap and buying yourself a new PSU, if it doesn't solve the problem simply return it within the 30 days that most stores allow, you wont need an excuse just make sure it's 'as arrived'.
