Dont buy a Asus a8n-sli deluxe!

Hi people, bit of a warning here for anyone thinking of buying the asus a8n-sli deluxe mobo, Dont! It has a faulty chipset fan that will start buzzing after 2-3 months,after that it may fail! I purchased mine here in uk 2nd jan 06 and the dreaded well reported buzzing noise is here. Apparently asus noticed this fault as the premium has a pipe cooler instead of the fan. Asus has even made a bigger, newer fan to replace the standard chipset fan, but people only find this out after reporting the fault.
I have always bought asus because of there reliability, and after spending over £1200 on a new system with a bad designed chipset fan on the mobo, which eventually will kill it,I feel obliged to report it and not let anyone else suffer the annoyance.

What 'awww'ing news.. I never knew Asus was THAT bad.. :P

Age old news m8, knew that since the stoneage... (at least since Asus deluxe came out)

(But ya, I heard of this problem as soon as I looked at the 939 mobo options)

Why can't you replace it with a Zalman passive NB sink for £3?

Shhh.. he's very upset.. i can tell :P

Sorry to tell you, fan's can and will fail. My NB chip is passively cooled, it stays around 27C, the space that's used up by a fan assembily is much better used for metalic surface area on the NB heatsink.. a dead fan doesn't mean you need to chuck out the whole board. That's like changing your whole pc because you broke your mouse.

If the fan was already mounted on the motherboard, then I expect the fan to last for the duration of the motherboard warranty. Simple as that.

The end users should not have to pay £3 (+ shipping I imagine) for a heatsink to fix a problem of a motherboard with a valid warranty. It might not be a lot of money, but it's a principle. If they cannot provide fans that last for two years, then they should either provide a few replacement fans, or offer passive cooling in the first place.

Again very old news, Asus realsied the problem and shipped out a replacement heatsink thats way quieter than the original. I used the new HSF for months without any trouble, I only went for my Zalman Northbridge cooler in order to go silent.

I agree - old news or no - the point is that it seems pretty shoddy and imho asus should have revised the mobo, put a passive sink on it or whatever. :stop:

Asus have ;)

The new fan is different in design in that it is metaillic and is embossed with "ASUS" with air-holes to get air in and out down the sides, whereas, the older varient of the fan was no more than a metal box with a fan in.

Ah - well that makes sense then :embarrassed: It did seem strange that a company like asus wouldnt do anything to correct such a widely known fault - I'll say no more :p

The newer one to the LEFT *doh* is a lot better than the older one, I can personally vouch for that as I've had to swap mine from an older "clicking" one to the newer one :)

Lee, are the A8N-SLI Deluxe and the A8N-E Ultra motherboards sold by Scan now fitted with the new model of chipset fan?

Yeap. All the boards now have a fan similar to the newer design.

fitted a Zalman passive cooler to mine which works a treat.

Much quieter too.

Let me say I've used the old, the new, and the Zalman. The new is as good as the Zalman under load and cooler off load. Against that you have a bit of noise - but it's not like the original fan. I wouldn't bother replacing the new fan with the Zalman but YMMV.

My mate's Asus was noisy straight out of the box, certainly put me off the board.

I believe that is the Zalman model I have strapped to my non-delux motherboard. Having read about the fan problems, I ordered one before my fan went noisy, so it was on hand when the fan got annoying (after 2 months). That means I must have been using the Zalman since last July. Got mine from microdirect, though I think Scan do them now as well.

Note that I did get a little nervous putting it in, and so installed an 80mm intake fan as I didn't think I had much air moving around the case before. Those Zalmans are intended for motherboards where the northbridge is closer to the CPU fan, and so gets some air from the CPU fan.Turning on Q-fan in the BIOS made the 80mm fan close to silent.

Oh, I did have to remove the motherboard to replace that fan (hence I left it the 2 months).

Just checked, and Scan do them for £2-93, so with 7 quid postage you save 6p over going to a Maplins and buying over the counter :)

If you fir a zalman VGA cooler the fan on the cooler cools the passive northy a treat!

tekheads.co.uk or thecoolingshop.com will probably do this cheaper than Maplins as their postage depends on the weight of the package.

Yep. I got mine from Tekheads about a year ago costing me about £5 total. Also good to pick up some Arctic Silver Ceramique while you're there :).

Ok here goes, I took the faulty mobo back to scan computers, they would not exchange but would repair it, so off they went and replaced the fan, got it home, NOTHING not even a P.O.S.T. beep! Took the whole pc back to scan, after a process of elimination a tech said he "may" have damaged the board during fitting. So another wait for a replacement, got the new mobo, and fitted on-site in scan. Guess what no P.O.S.T. NOTHING!! The tech's then gathered round for another process of elimination and to my amazement the new mobo was FAULTY AGAIN!! :angst: Fuming at this I explained I don't want this board I want an upgrade (and pay the difference) to the premium version. After much arguing they explained only after 3 faults will they refund the cost. HAH trapped! So i got the new premium board, got the tech's to fit it and test it 5 times! And it works!!
Got it home and the constant switching on and off and the faulty mobo's damaged a 160gb sata 2 hdd (under warranty) and put bad sectors on a 200gb sata hdd (warranty expired).

I used to thought Asus had great mobo's but after that,.. well you can only think the same, as me.

It seems like you've had a little bad luck during this little fiasco...

I have the A8N-Sli Deluxe bought it back in Jan 05 chipset fan went around Jan 06 they sent me the new one as Lee shows in his picture, and that to my amazement was making a stupid "fan hitting the bloody fan case" noise, two minutes later and a little screwdriver prising the fan case was (with a little persuading) not touching the fan anymore. :P

But other than that little problem, the board has been fantastic its never let me down and its still going strong now with my Water-cooling kit attached to it as well. :)
