    Question on SATA Driver

Do different motherboard require a different SATA driver to work under Windows?

I remember having to install one before my drive could be recognised when I built my last PC. I am about to perform a near complete upgrade: most component will be swapped but my HDs will stay. What I am not sure is if I could just take out my old motherboard with all the stuff on it, and put my new motherboard in it and expect the system to load Windows. Of course, I will be doing a full format anyway, but I want to know whether my SATA boot drive will be detected by Windows without installing new SATA drivers.

If it won't, then I'll need to find out how to install the SATA drivers since my system is currently floppyless.

Depends if the new motherboard uses the same SATA chip as the old one, if not you'll need to install the new driver.. However I might point out that swapping motherboards will probibly make windows spaz out and require a reinstall, or at the very least reactivation.

Thanks. Different chipset I am sure. Darn. Now guess I need to make an XP installation disk WITH SATA drivers.

Time like these I wouldn't mind having a cheap laptop. Just to make sure that I can troubleshoot online once I unplug this PC

In my case (ASUS A8N-SLi Premium with Windows XP x64) you only need to install the drivers for RAID - running a single HDD works just fine through Windows
