What Opteron would people suggest to get i was thinking of getting an ATHLON 64 3700+ but then i looked at the Opteron over clocking potential and changed my mind.

I am doing the same, fancy an opteron 146 just for the ten multplier but have a DFI NF4 board so it may not be a problem to get an opteron 144. I presume you want single core too.
Missed getting on to these earlier so getting one now.
Check my thread on opteron 144/146 to see which new cores are clocking well
Ok will do.

146. 3.0Ghz on the 10 multiplier is very sweet. :woowoo:

I'm also in the 3g opteron club. I would recommend the 146 purely becasue of the 10 multi - it gives you a bit more flexibility.
I would expect any opt 146 to hit 2.7Ghz. I'm not too sure how the newer cores clock but that's what I would expect from playing with 3 of them.
So really it's a case of finding how far a 3700 will go, factor in the cost of heatsink and compare with an opty
rin january i heard a lot about 3700 San diego cores hitting 3GHz, so they have been clocking pretty much as well as the Opterons.
It depends on how much you want to spend, really, if the opteron is cheaper go for it, if the 3700 is cheaper, then grab that.
They both have the potential to overclock very well, but it all depends on the stepping you get!
the Opteron is by far the more impressive chip though, the extra expense comes from better QA, and more cache.
An Opteron more cache than a San Diego core you say... :undecided :p
Anyways, my 3700+ can hit 3GHz but it needs quite a bit of voltage (1.6v) to get there, where as Opterons appear to require much less. Then again, mine does wonders with a lower voltage - 2.75GHz at 1.425v - which is what I run it at 24/7.
Price wise, an Opteron wins - the Opteron 146 OEM is currently on Scan's Today Only for £122 - I'd snap it up if I was you.
Think i might have to do that have to wait till i get paid tho.Quote:
