Good software/applications for laptops! Whats good?

Just got me my first laptop after years of desktop use!

Was wondering if anyone knows some good applications or free software that they recommend or couldn't live without....

Especially any applications that could let me use the edge of the touchpad to scroll pages!

The touchpad part is on most notebooks (dependant on drivers etc.) but is normally synaptics I think, tis under the mouse controls.

I just use my lappy instead of a desktop now, have everything on it and live off sourceforge!
