Coolest running chips?

On a stock hsf what do you reckon are the coolest running cpu cores for A64 s939? Im thinking that cool helps to equal quiet as my overclocked clawhammer is something of a volcano tbh What about the A64 3700/3800? Venice cores?? How clockable are these things?

Don't have the answer you want i'm afraid, although I am curious why you are certain you want a stock heatsink & fan.... is it a height issue, a laziness issue or do you hold stocks and shares in standard AMD hsf's?

Lol! No - the reason for that is i wanted to try and get an idea of heat output on with a standard hsf - i'll prolly use the zalman 7700 - just so ididnt get the wrong idea i.e. someone saying that they get really low temps on a certain core but not mentioning that they're using a particularly good hsf etc etc

...and now to go promote AMD hsf's and buy some stocks

I think that is a really tricky question, specially as the stock coolers are temperature sensing and automatically speed up when things get warmer. You need to know the fan RPM as well as the ambient temperature.

Basically venice is the coolest, especially if you underclock and reduce voltage. I wouldnt worry about it though. A friend of mine has a 7700 that keeps his overclocked P4 at sensible temps, so it shouldnt have much trouble with the much lower heat output of a A63. However, i would advise you to look into a different cooler, things like the scythe ninja are much quieter if you choose the right fan

LOL Nothing wrong with the retail coolers - I find the heatpipe cooler that is with the FX series of processors is an ideal cooler for the 3500+ clocked to the hills.

I do however have a TEC cooler that needs installing (damn backplates) and this is said to shave upto 10 degrees from the temperature

Hmm, my 144 with the IHS off ran hotter than my 3200+ at the same clockspeed with lower voltage so I'm not sure about heat. Performance and voltage definately better but I think they do run slightly (1-2c for equivalent chip) hotter.

Well done mate, you will not regret it. Opterons are great, and I think AMD are taking sales away from their Athlon division because of them (i heard that they recently tried to increase the cost of the 939's, although i havent seen much more than a £10 increase in reality).

Good call, it will clock well and is a top chip. Might run hotter but whats a few degrees here or there when you've got good cooling

But I get the feeling you were looking for 1st hand experience info from the overclockers amongst us!

I'm certainly enjoying my A64 3700 - using the Zalman 9500LED HSF, at its lowest and quietest speed setting, it's barely raising a sweat at 36C under load. Not OC'd at the moment - it's only a month old so I'm treating it nice for now

This (Opteron) stock cooler is actually making me think twice whether I should bother bother splashing £30+ on a high end air cooler with 120mm fans. My main concern is noise: 80mm fans just ain't quiet (already toned it down to 2000 RPM).
If it weren't for that, I would definitely stick with my stock HS.

And if this graph is anything to go by, the stock cooler does not lose out to the Zalman 7700 - not at all:

I don't know why everyone has this cooling obsession, I'd be worried if there was no heat coming from it at all. j/k

I can't speak for A64 owners, but my P4 prescott stock cooler was rubbish, the XP-120 and some AS5 did the trick rightly

Well its not heat per se - more the fact that the more heat tends to require the bigger/faster fan and therefore more noise - which im not looking for, at all
