Dont buy a Asus a8n-sli deluxe!

Hi people, bit of a warning here for anyone thinking of buying the asus a8n-sli deluxe mobo, Dont! It has a faulty chipset fan that will start buzzing after 2-3 months,after that it may fail! I purchased mine here in uk 2nd jan 06 and the dreaded well reported buzzing noise is here. Apparently asus noticed this fault as the premium has a pipe cooler instead of the fan. Asus has even made a bigger, newer fan to replace the standard chipset fan, but people only find this out after reporting the fault.
I have always bought asus because of there reliability, and after spending over £1200 on a new system with a bad designed chipset fan on the mobo, which eventually will kill it,I feel obliged to report it and not let anyone else suffer the annoyance.

Why can't you replace it with a Zalman passive NB sink for £3?

Sorry to tell you, fan's can and will fail. My NB chip is passively cooled, it stays around 27C, the space that's used up by a fan assembily is much better used for metalic surface area on the NB heatsink.. a dead fan doesn't mean you need to chuck out the whole board. That's like changing your whole pc because you broke your mouse.

If the fan was already mounted on the motherboard, then I expect the fan to last for the duration of the motherboard warranty. Simple as that.

The end users should not have to pay £3 (+ shipping I imagine) for a heatsink to fix a problem of a motherboard with a valid warranty. It might not be a lot of money, but it's a principle. If they cannot provide fans that last for two years, then they should either provide a few replacement fans, or offer passive cooling in the first place.

Again very old news, Asus realsied the problem and shipped out a replacement heatsink thats way quieter than the original. I used the new HSF for months without any trouble, I only went for my Zalman Northbridge cooler in order to go silent.

I agree - old news or no - the point is that it seems pretty shoddy and imho asus should have revised the mobo, put a passive sink on it or whatever.

The new fan is different in design in that it is metaillic and is embossed with "ASUS" with air-holes to get air in and out down the sides, whereas, the older varient of the fan was no more than a metal box with a fan in.

Ah - well that makes sense then It did seem strange that a company like asus wouldnt do anything to correct such a widely known fault - I'll say no more

The newer one to the LEFT *doh* is a lot better than the older one, I can personally vouch for that as I've had to swap mine from an older "clicking" one to the newer one

Lee, are the A8N-SLI Deluxe and the A8N-E Ultra motherboards sold by Scan now fitted with the new model of chipset fan?

Yeap. All the boards now have a fan similar to the newer design.

fitted a Zalman passive cooler to mine which works a treat.

Much quieter too.
