    Q: what do I need for a NAS system?

    Hi,

    Building a NAS system using 6 HDDs and serving via NFS, SMB, FTP, iTunes and SSH. It's going to be running ubuntu headless.

    The questions are:

    1. What kind of power supply is 6 (looking towards 8 maybe) HDDs going to need? 10W a piece?

    2. What kind of processor is going to be needed to serve over gigE (looking at 20MBps sustained as a minimum)?

    The choices atm are K6-500 / 92MB RAM, P3-700 / 256MB RAM and AMD 2800 / 256MB RAM.

    Cheers,

    HD wattage will vary depending on what they are doing, but more around 5/6 watt is a realistic figure. If you go to the drives manufacture site, they will actually list it.

    The more important factor of using gigE is how you are integrating it into the system. If you’re using bog standard PCI slots, there is little point, as its going to be hugely bottled necked.
    Then you have to factor in who makes the gigE card – you can get them from “software” based ones, where the CPU does all the work, to ones with its own dedicated processor onboard. Cost will obviously scale with the features.

    Nice suprise on the power front .

    I'm still undecided on the performance though. I'm looking to make this a cheap as chips project, probably only a 5 quid NIC, ... Indeed most users are going to be connected via wifi anyway, just a couple of power users with direct access. I'm hoping for near local performance for file operations, e.g. video streaming, file renaming / moving, ... Nothing high performance, just not dog slow.

    Quick question - wouldn't a specific OS like FreeNAS be better?

    Q: how would it be better?
    * no DAAPD support
    * looks like it has no / limited scripting support
    * no package management

    ...

    I'll stick with Ubuntu -server thanks.

    Anyone with a similar system? What are the specs?

    Hi there,

    Can't really comment much -- but am quite interested to see what is recommended. I've recently discovered Ubuntu (very good it is too) and am quite keen on moving my data onto a NAS...
