cheap 'ghetto' mods, tips and tricks

Right, we had one of these before the crash and i think its time to resurrect it.

basically post your handy inexpensive hints for moddage or just general maintenence.

To start:

To control dust levels inside your case without spending huuuge wodges of dosh on expensive foam air filters simply steal a pair of your mums/girlfriends/nextdoor neighbours old tights and cut out a square slightly smaller than your fan when the fabric is unstretched.

attach to your fan with a strong rubber band and voila! when the filter is full simply wash it or chuck it away and make a new one.

NOTE: fishnets are entirely unsuitable in this application unless you plan on filtering out hamsters.

;) I've heard nail varnish that glows in the dark or under florecent lighting works a treat inside your case and on the edges of PCI/AGP cards. Should be perfectly safe.

:cool: Clean your kit monthly, that way all you need to do is exhale close to the HS, fans etc as the dust/dirt never gets a chance to build up or glue itself on. Exhale sounds a little cleaner than blow!

:) Want to get your TVout working on a TV that's far away? Simply use a VCR (or similar device), input as SCART (or other) from your gfx card's TVout and then use std cheap RF leads to reach your TV. Length is virtually unlimited.

i got a ghetto repair in my old PC. i broke off a fuse while taking the heatsync off, which stoped the keyboard port from working (old AT one) so i selotaped a peice of tinfoil over where the fuse should be. Works a treat

I use it to hold case fans in place. Reduces vibration, resulting in quieter operation compared to screwing them.

make your own LED fan's....... It's more fun, and you can get a better effect :)

Inexpensive but useful - and I'm sure most of you know this one:

Remove the nasty grills that came on your case!

Costs about 80p for a new grill - and will have more benefit than any other mod you do in terms of noise and airflow

the grills on my coolermaster look fine :).

but they do get dented easily :(. anyone know where i can get a magnetic screwdriver to remove the grills?

Yeah - Antec/etc and CoolerMaster cases tend to have nice grills anyhow....

Why not make your own? - just get a magnet and stroke the screwdriver several times on one direction.

BAD MOD TIP:

Peeing on your case doesnt make for cost effective water cooling..... (its body temperature you see ;) )

If your fan packs in on ur graphics card, just strap an 80mm fan on it with some cable ties - works a treat, even on low on a fan controller it works as good as (if not better) than the std fan and it's quieter too. Don't look too hot though!
