"Stepping" on an AMD Athlon64 X2 processor?

I saw a place that offers two different versions of an AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+, at two different prices! The higher priced version indicates that it has a "stepping" of "E6". Whereas the lower priced version doesn't indicate anything about the stepping. I have not seen that distinction made by any other online seller.

What is stepping? And why would the "E6" stepping be worth more? And is it worth it?

Mon and latrosicarius -- you both got "E4" steppings on your X2 processor. When was that?

Here's why I ask. I've found only one online vendor that even mentions the stepping, and gives you a choice -- you pay more for the E6 stepping. (That place is ZipZoomFly.com). Other places (like Newegg.com) don't give a choice, and neither do they assure you of getting an E6 stepping. Instead, they claim their merchandise turns over so fast that they are always selling the latest stuff. (I presume that would be the E6 stepping -- however, they make no guarantee of that.) Anyway, that's why I'm asking when (how long ago) you received the E4 stepping.

Hmmm. I found an online vendor (here) that sells two versions of the X2 4400+, at two different prices. The only difference I could detect was that the higher priced version has an E6 stepping, (while the stepping of the lower priced version isn't mentioned). But if all X2 4400+ are the same (as you seem to suggest), then why the two different prices?

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ctCode=80726-1 says E6 but as far as I can see the other doesn't specify stepping?
maybe they bought them at different times & got different pricing, it happens.

And am I correct in assuming it is an Athlon64 X2 4400+? (With E4 stepping -- which would disprove that they are all E6 stepping.)

I bought my X2 4200+ last week from NewEgg and set it up this past weekend. So it's very recent.
