The 3700 is mabee a bit over the top for flight sims, although i am not certain what their processor requirements tend to be like. You could drop that down to a 3200 and put the money towqards a prettier case, or whatever you feel like. For the flight sims I doubt you need that much ram either, so you could save some mney by getting only 1 1gb stick and getting the second only when you need it, i.e. when prices have dropped. Although then there is the problem that you are lazy like me and never get round to upgrading it.

last flight sim I played was the original microsoft combat flight simulator.
And I had to doubly my RAM to 32mb to get it to run nicely.

If price is restricting your case options, you might want to consider going for only a single 1Gb stick of RAM right now. You can always add another later, just don't wait too long as the arrival on socket AM2 and it's DDR2 support will mean DDR1 will phase out eventually.

I'd reckon you will safely be able to pick up another Gb within the next 6 months for about the same price you are paying now. In about a year, DDR1 might start getting scare, and hence more expensive.

AFAIK, there aren't that may games / apps on the market right now that require 2Gb to run. Battlefield 2 is one that does, but there are not too many more.

Other than that, I'd say it's a pretty good system for the cash. Your friend should be more than happy with it.

Looked at going dual core amd but price of the cpu (looked at 3800) puts it over budget

i reckon an opteron 144 or 146 would be a wiser choice of cpu. Cheaper, and can be overclocked to at least as fast as 3700 with relative ease
