er, the most expensive? get one that does 640x480, as it'll be much better quality than one that only does 320x something
my mate got one of the cheapest logitechs from argos, and the quality's really good just for simple webcam / msn messenger use.
what would you be using it for?

Most webcams will do 640x480 but only at 15fps which looks like arse (and normally is actually about 10fps). What you want is one that does 640x480 @ 30fps, otherwise it is pretty much standard.

please no stripping....get a big red light above the cam so you dont forget its on !

the problem is noone's broadband is fast enough for the 30fps at 640x480. At least not real time streaming. YOu can record then have a file for download. In fact I think you need a USB 2.0 to get 640x480 at 30fps at least with out major compression.
I have a webcam at work to moniter the warehouse people. But its an IP/network cam. D-Link DCS-1000. You can create user and admin name/passwords. So if you want to set up multiple users to view... its easy. And multiple admins too. With out using your computer's resources and/or creating a security opening. And can run a long Cat5 wire.... USB cams have to be fairly close to PC.
with my D-Link Network camera I can get about:
640x480 - 3-4 fps (uses about 1500kbs from network monitering it) would max out a T1
320x240 - low compression 14 fps
320x240 - high compression 30 fps
this is on my local LAN (Linksys 16-port 10/100 Workgroup Switch with no traffic). Now the fps limitation is probably the camera's hardware problem not bandwidth.
(cable modems are usually 1500-4000kbps down and 128-512kbs upstream) average 2Mbps down and 256kb up. So since most people only have 256Kbs upstream their webcam experience is going to be limited to 320x240.
