Need help- Sis's PC keeps rebooting

    Hi there,

    Spec-

    ASUS P4S8X
    P4 2.4GHZ 478
    1x512mb PC2700
    60GB IDE HD
    FSP 350W PSU
ATI 9800 PRO with Artic Silencer

Ok, all was working fine, I had the CPU overclocked at 2.54ghz. The comp booting at stayed at a black screen, out of nowhere. I went back into bios and set all to default then it booted, but when I try to login i get a BSOD. I checked all connections and all seemed fine. It came out of nowhere.

    Anyhelp?

If thats a northwood, they will all do atleast 3.0ghz easily... So the overclocking prob lies elsewhere.

Switch off the 'automatic restart' feature in system proprties -> advanced -> startup & recovery settings, then you will see what the message is, and go from there.

I resetted CMOS (turned pc off then I used the jumper thingy). Now when it turns on it hangs, and i get a message saying in bios that the comp is hanging due to improper cpu speed. but ive set it to default!!!

try reducing it to see if it makes any difference, is it connected to a surge protector?

    Whats a surge protector?

Ok I reset CMOS properly and same thing. The system will just hang on multiple restarts but I got into the BIOS after a while and it said I had an improper CPU frequency again. I set it to the lowest setting that was there and it still did not boot up.

Is the PC dead? Its a 3year+ old machine.

    Thanks guys

    In this order:

    Switch off the PSU switch
Switch off, but don't unplug the wall socket
Take the battery out of the mobo, carefully
Unplug all cables from the motherboard (can leave fans in)
Wait for couple of hours (usually 30 mins works, just to be safe) you can also set the cmos clear jumper during this time if you want, worth doing for 5 mins, no reason not to.

This will completely disharge every setting in the BIOS, back to factory.

    Plug everything back in.

    See what happens.

    Well it definatly resetting IMO.

I turned off PC, turned off the switch at socket and then took the battery out for around 15 seconds and took out the jumper and placed it on the other slot too. I then returned the power and realised that the jumper was at the wrong place, so i set it about putting it back in the correct position.

I then tryed to reboot and did it multiple times, no use, nothing happend just a black screen and the HD light stayed on.

I finally got into bios and selected LOAD DEFAULT settings and still, i got a message saying I have an improper CPU frequency! I SET IT TO MINIMUM! THE SLOWEST!

But I will try what you said, just to be safe.

A surge protector is a power strip thing (makes one socket say 6). It protects the pc from any power surges, just a thought.

are you able to check the bios settings or does the pc not get that far? Instead of just selecting default check the main settings yourself?

Have you a spare battery to try? Only other thing I can think of before saying its buggered, i mean, if its not saving the settings...

or maybe a replacement BIOS chip? tried re-flashing bios? got an bios savior in mine... just in case.

I have set the default settings and I still get an error.

I get to the BIOS screen but only after I pull the plug out of the PSU and then back in.

    Will this work?
