If all you’re doing is playing games, then single core is fine. There is very few situations (at the moment) where duel core will benefit people.
The bottom line is: if you dont know why you need duel core, then you dont

As for upgrading: AM2 comes out in a few months, but just keep in mind that it will cost a premium. You'll also need DDR2 RAM. Then remember that any bugs will have to be ironed out in the new hardware.
Personally, id go with a mid/cheap mobo and a opty. Your not going to be spending loads , but getting a huge boost. Plus you'll be able to sell them for a reasonable price later on too

XP120 is a fine cooler . Im using the XP90 and are well happy with it

Excellent. Looks like its going to be the Abit something-or-other board, XP-120 cooler and either the 144 or 146.

Is there and disadvantage for going for the 144 over the 146?

the only real disadvantage is that you only have the 9x & below multis on the 144 whereas the 146 has the 10X.
That means that you have to do 333HTT for 3.0GHz (assuming CPU capable) on a 144 as opposed to 300 on a 146.

    Multipliers locked?

You've got me here, has the game changed? I used to pop my FSB to 200 and just crank up the multiplier. What's a cretin got to do nowadays?

Apart from FXs K8 multis are only unlocked down the way.
AMD was locking multis on XPs for the last couple of years of socket A's life.

& you are going to have to learn a whole new way of overclocking

This is the perfect thread, essentially what i was looking for, the equivalent JHUIB, BH-5, unlockable 9800SE, NF7-S equiv.

Surely the ASROCK board is a board to be seriously considered, a friend of mine is running a 3700+ @ 2.8GHz v1.45 on his.

    laze.

It's OK & good vfm but it's a bit barebones for my taste (only 2 fan headers, limited voltages etc.)
Your friend obviously has a good chip which is just as well because iirc 1.45V is the max that you can get without a volt mod.
Is he running 1T? Quite a lot of people have problems with that on the 939 DualSATA.

there is a new BIOS out that supposedly solves the 1T problem.

i can get 1.5v to my chip on my dual sata, depends on the chip. the board is rock solid with the right BIOS, i run 272x10 day to day on 1.5v.

this board is an overclocking bargain of note, and easily volt modded, although with the right opteron you wont need to. for £40 you cant go wrong.
